The Boy Scout Movement was founded in 1908 by Lord Baden Powell in United Kingdom with an aim to develop young boys as good citizens, chivalrous behavior and skill in various outdoor activities. This movement provided young people with opportunities to participate in programmes, events, activities and projects which contributed to their growth as active citizens. Within a few years Scouting spread to other countries including India.

In the Princely State of Mysore the Boy Scout Movement was started in early 1918/1919 with the active patronage of the royalty. The Maharaja Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar not only gave generous grants for the movement but also appointed his brother Yuvaraja Sri Kantirava Narasimharaja Wodeyar as the Chief Scout; who among the royal personages in India was the first to appear in public rallies in khaki shirt and shorts, the uniform of the scouts. The strength of the scouts which was 900 in the beginning within a span of three decades stood at 42,000 in 1950. Among the princely states in India, Mysore stood first in terms of the number of scouts enrolled. As the Boy Scouts had boys of different age groups, those in between six and ten were called cubs, between eleven and seventeen called scouts and between eighteen and twenty-five called rovers. In 1928 the Boy Scout of Mysore was affiliated to the All India Association at Delhi. The same year the Boy Scouts of Mysore published the Indian Scouts Year Book, the first of its kind in India. It also used to publish a monthly journal The Mysore Scout in English and The Mysore Makkalu in Kannada. In 1932 the Girls Guide Movement was started and similar to the division among the Boys Scouts based on age the Girls Guide was grouped as blue birds, guides and rangers.

    Activities for the Scouts

Some of the activities in which the scouts were involved were adventure activities wherein they were taken to excursions, trekking, camping, etc.; service activities wherein they used to create awareness on health and hygiene. They were given training in leadership qualities, drill and March past, in marksmanship, handicrafts, swimming, in extinguishing fires, in giving first aid and other such activities. During Dasara the Maharaja used to review the parade of the Scouts and present a flag to the most meritorious troop.

    Services of the Scouts

The Boy Scouts of Mysore worked as volunteers in public functions, rescued people from drowning, extinguished accidental fires, administered first aid to the injured, helped restore lost child to their parents and helped old persons cross a busy thoroughfare. Other activities of the scout involved lending a helping hand for those carrying heavy baggage in railway station, feeding of poor at public functions, construction of school buildings, etc.

    Distinction in competitions

The Boy Scouts of Mysore attended various jamborees held in India and participated in events and competitions. For instance, they participated in the All India Ambulance Trophy held at Madras and Calcutta in 1923 and won distinction. In 1924 they stood second in the competition and in 1927 in the competition held at Ajmer they won a cup and cash prize of Rs. 50. They also attended scout camps and rallies held abroad in places like Ceylon, Liverpool, Copenhagen and Godollo.

In August 1951 the Mysore Boys Scouts Association and the Mysore Girls Guide Association merged with the Hindustan Scouts Association under the name of Bharat Scouts and Guides.
