How do I get into the claims business?

Great question. The claims business is very broad. You have different types of claims: property claims, bodily injury claims. You have work comp claims, But the best way to learn any of them is to go to work for an insurance company, and if you have an idea or an interest in property. For example, you like to watch HGTV all the time. Property claims might be for you, but the best way to get started is to go in and apply to an insurance company. That's how I got started. I went into a company in the northwest, applied to be an insurance adjuster, and they were so surprised at somebody that came in off the street asking to do that. I had an interview that afternoon, and three days later, I was hired. So that's what I would do. Go to work for an insurance company to start with and that's the best way.

What is a good time in your career to become an independent claims adjuster?

A good time is up to you is to when you feel comfortable with your knowledge base to go out there on your own and solicit work from various insurance companies that are gonna rely on your expertise to manage their claims and to handle them in a manner that they want. They have service level agreements and so forth, and so it's up to you to be able to know and have the background to be able to do that right from the get-go, so be careful, but it's a great opportunity to jump out and start your own business.

How do I stay motivated in my line of work?

Motivation is a key element in any career path and staying motivated in our industry, in the claims industry, is actually very easy because it's a changing landscape constantly. Technology is changing, and you have to stay on top of everything, so how to stay motivated is stay on top. Read everything you can.
