E96 - INXS -The Very Best

E96 - INXS -The Very Best

Step back with the Personal Jukebox as we delve into the career and music of the somewhat iconic and definitely influential band INXS. This time we take a dive into the band's rise to fame, their early output, their chart-topping hits, and the tragic loss of their enigmatic frontman, Michael Hutchence by covering the band’s 2011 compilation album “INXS The Very Best”

Join us as we explore the evolution of INXS's sound, from their early days playing in Sydney pubs and gigs to under 20 fans in the US to their international success with hits like "Need You Tonight" and "New Sensation” as well as waxing lyrical about “Never Tear Us Apart”. Of course we cover the shadier moments of the band including THAT moment at the Brits & the search for Hutchence’s replacement as well and delivering all the usual Jukeboxpod good times.

E94 - POWER BALLADS Top 30 (Bon Jovi, Poison, Cher, Aerosmith, Tina Turner & MORE)

E94 - POWER BALLADS Top 30 (Bon Jovi, Poison, Cher, Aerosmith, Tina Turner & MORE)

The Power Ballad. Loved by many (including our co-host on this ep) but labelled by others as a product of a bygone era. In the vast majority of cases these songs are characterised by emotional and heartfelt lyrics, powerful vocals, and a melodic and dramatic instrumental arrangement. Typically, power ballads feature a slow tempo, allowing the singer to showcase their vocal range and express deep emotions. The lyrics often revolve around themes of love, heartbreak, and personal struggles, resonating with listeners on an emotional level. Power ballads are known for their anthemic choruses and memorable guitar solos, creating a sense of intensity and passion in the music. These songs have been performed by bands or solo artists at the absolute peak of their powers but on this pod we collate numerous online polls to discuss the top 30.
Plus we talk about Sex Neil seeing a ghost and his potential rendezvous with swingers, go figure…

    E93 - Travis - Good Feeling

    E93 - Travis - Good Feeling

“Oh yeah” you may say, “I remember Travis, always asking why it was raining, telling us to turn/sing etc”. Well on this episode we focus on the band’s first album, released in late 1997 and spawning 4 top 40 singles, even if you didn’t realise at the time. We’ve mentioned before on the pod that Travis, alongside The Verve (and Embrace lol) were somewhat of a middle stepping ground between the 90s ‘Britpop’ and what would follow for UK guitar bands, à la Coldplay in the early 00s but this album showcases a more raw sound before they inexplicably sold massive with ‘The Man Who’.
All this Travis discussion plus the usual japes.

TAKEOVER 3 - Send No Flowers - Juice

TAKEOVER 3 - Send No Flowers - Juice

Ning is back to takeover the Personal Jukebox alongside his JifnotCif brethren as they drill down the album ‘Juice’ by Send No Flowers.
This was the 1996 debut & ended up as the only album put out by the British five-piece who really distilled their sound on this effort but information on the net in scarce. How good are the songs? Why didn’t the band last? Listen in and find out.

    E92 - Republica - Republica

    E92 - Republica - Republica

Ok, this episode is partly due to a listener suggestion following Sex Neil’s love of a big beat & a female vocal so this time we head into the self-titled debut album from Republica. Another record released in that sweet mid-to-late 90s slot that we love here on the Personal Jukebox. Surely EVERYBODY knows the twin big hits from this one but you ever heard any of the other stuff? We hadn’t tbh. And what actually were Republica? A pop-rock band? A dance act? Listen in as we try to decipher Saffron and her band of merry men.
