The Friendly Outsider is Jay Friendly, a Canadian who left his homeland in the year 2000, and has just returned home after twenty years living in Asia and Australia, and traveling around the world. This podcast will explore his thoughts on returning to his homeland after such a journey, and his perspective on the world, Canada, and otherwise, as someone who is coming at it from a different perspective, the perspective of an outsider, and now an insider as well.
Having spent 17 years in Japan, first working in Japanese companies, then starting his own IT company, Jay learned both the language and the culture, and how to adapt to living and life in Japan. This has led to an interesting perspective, and a different way of seeing things.
Join Jay on his journey back to his homeland, and his re-integration into Canadian society, and take a trip through life in his eyes, and those of the people he meets. This is the Friendly Outsider. Welcome Inside!

3 - Living with Uncertainty
Note - I've been holding off on doing a podcast during this time of uncertainty with covid, until and unless I had something I felt was relevant to say. I've recorded a few different casts, but have held off on releasing them for now. I feel this one however is perfectly relevant now in this time of extreme uncertainty the world has suddenly found itself in.
On the afternoon of March 3, 2011, I was sitting in my office talking on Skype with a colleague, when a massive earthquake struck off the coast of the Tohoku (東北) region of Japan, causing a massive tsunami that killed nearly 20,000 people, and displaced hundreds of thousands of more from their homes. The resulting tsunami caused a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima power plant. I had a new business, and a wife and young child to take care of, and had to make some major decisions, in a time of uncertainty.
In this podcast, I discuss that time, and the lessons I learned in making decisions in times of uncertainty.

In this episode, Jay talks about what The Friendly Outsider is all about. Jay discusses the ideas that this podcast will discuss - identity, nationality, internationality, growth, and tech. Jay also discusses his re-integration into both Western and Canadian society, and the reverse-culture-shock that comes along with these changes. He also talks of a somewhat jarring welcome into a new group, due to the world having changed and Jay not necessarily having kept up.
