3333 - Israel Rejects Peace; Good Social Security News, & Audits Coming For The Rich

3333 - Israel Rejects Peace; Good Social Security News, & Audits Coming For The Rich

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s advance on Rafah in the wake of Hamas accepting a ceasefire deal proposed by the US, the testimony of Stormy Daniels, Social Security, Boeing, Biden’s support for Israel, Trump’s legal woes, inter-state abortion immigration, the RNC, and MTG, before watching Brian Kilmeade attempt to spin Trump’s ongoing trials into victories for Trump’s enterprise. Next, they parse through the recent story around Hamas accepting a ceasefire-for-hostages deal, only for Israel to immediately turn around and kill the agreement as they moved forward with their invasion of Rafah, closing down Rafah crossing, demanding evacuation (from the last haven in Palestine), and separating families, in a desperate push to complete this ethnic cleansing. Sam and Emma look at the recent “warning” letter sent to the International Criminal Court by 12 GOP Senators (from McConnell to Cruz) threatening retaliation and worse if the ICC continues with its plan to issue arrest warrants for Bibi Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, and tackle Biden’s impending deadline to prove Israel’s compliance with humanitarian law following the Leahy Law as they explore how the US’ unwavering support for this genocide has only further weakened the international “rules-based” order that Biden supposedly sought to restore. After walking through the recent reports on the promising future of Social Security and Medicaid, and the importance of expanded IRS capacity, Sam and Emma wrap up the free half with a deep dive into the recent revelations around Henry Cuellar’s corruption, and what that means for Democratic Party leadership’s support for his reelection.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the controversy around Kristi Noem undertaking a typical matriarchal task (slaughtering the family puppy), Bernadette from New England dives into the classism ingrained in the US Healthcare system, and Osama from North Carolina asks about Egypt’s potential in conflict with Israel. George Santos catches Nick Fuentes with a gotcha that could only stump a homophobic fascist, the right has a new solution for social alienation (a bogus male supplement), and Dan from Texas explores term limits for SCOTUS Justices. Clay from Minnesota discusses the administrative backlash to anti-war activism at Carleton College, plus, your calls and IMs!

3332 - 2020: The Year Everything Changed w/ Eric Klinenberg

3332 - 2020: The Year Everything Changed w/ Eric Klinenberg

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Eric Klinenberg, professor in social science and Director of the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University, to discuss his recent book 2020: One City, Seven People, and the Year Everything Changed.  First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s staunch refusal to stop the bloodshed in Gaza, a tentative hold on US ammo to Israel, famine in Gaza, Missouri abortion rights, starvation in Sudan, US labor law, the downfall of Henry Cuellar, and Utah’s new tip line for anonymous genital reports. Professor Eric Klinenberg then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma preface the conversation with the idea of “natural disasters” largely being a function of society’s capacity to deal with natural phenomena, with “2020” looking at what the crises under COVID revealed about the incredibly precarious, fractured, and individualist society of the United States. Expanding on this, Professor Klinenberg tackles the ethnographic nature of this work, and the overwhelming nature of the trauma suffered by the public during the pandemic, something also seen during the Spanish Flu epidemic in the early 20th Century. After further contextualizing the United State’s role as an outlier in many regards when it came to the COVID-19 pandemic, including its supposedly elite levels of preparedness and its disproportionate failure in preventing deaths, Eric walks Sam and Emma through the unique failure that faced the US in the form of a complete abdication of leadership from the federal government – led (at the time) by the Trump Administration – in favor of extreme politicization, nihilism, and polarization at a time where social solidarity was of the utmost importance. Klinenberg looks at the glimmers of hope found throughout these crises, and how the government quickly stamped them out, before exploring the Biden Administration’s particular role in refusing to acknowledge or address the continuing effects of these crises, and the US’ ever-precarious footing heading into the 2024 election.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch as Mitt Romney lets the connection between Israel and the TikTok ban slip, and Alan Dershowitz offers to go to legal defense for the ultimate victims of anti-semitism: Christian Zionists. Ole Miss frat boys show up for apartheid, Kristi Noem objects to another fake-news narrative picked up from her autobiography, and Marjorie Taylor Greene just wants to be clear about who’s responsible for Jesus’ death. Jerry Seinfeld finally breaks through the shackles of Big Woke in his newest release "Unfrosted: the Pop-Tart Story", plus, your calls and IMs!

    3331 - Propaganda, Protest, & Politics w/ Mehdi Hasan

    3331 - Propaganda, Protest, & Politics w/ Mehdi Hasan

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Mehdi Hasan, founder, CEO, and editor-in-chief of the new media company Zeteo, to discuss the biggest stories of the week and his new venture. First, Sam & Emma check in on Trump's trial, where people are concerned about how he keeps falling asleep. But that doesn't matter to South Carolina diner patrons* (*Ainsley Earhardt's friends and family), including former South Carolina State Rep. Chip Huggins, who thinks Trump is being crucified in court. It also doesn't apply to NewsMax's Carl Higbie, who is ecstatic to see how much energy Trump is showing by taking a car from lower Manhattan to Trump Tower on 5th Avenue. Then Mehdi joins Sam and Emma, and they discuss how the propaganda in support of Israel appearing on news and social media is the greatest since the entire media machine threw itself behind the Iraq War in the early 2000's. They discuss President Biden's reactions to the campus protests, the weaponization of the word "democracy", the baffling decision by Senate Majority Leader Schumer to reportedly partner with Speaker Johnson to invite Netanyahu to address Congress, and also check out Sen. Bernie Sanders explaining why Israel may end up being President Biden's own version of Vietnam.
And in the Fun Half, the MR Crew check out Joe Rogan decrying out of control wokeness infiltrating college campuses, a respected Dartmouth history professor, Annelise Orleck, being forcibly arrested by police at a campus protest, Mehdi Hasan expertly dressing down Piers Morgan in a debate over the usage of the word "Intifada", and Donald Trump pretending like he doesn't know who RFK Jr. is when asked about him, even though they met at Trump Tower in 2016, and Trump is worried he's going to siphon votes away from him in November. Plus, your calls & IM's!

3330 - Myths About Migrants; Why Israel ‘Pinkwashes’ w/ César García Hernández, Schyuler Mitchell

3330 - Myths About Migrants; Why Israel ‘Pinkwashes’ w/ César García Hernández, Schyuler Mitchell

It’s an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández, Chair in Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at Ohio State University, to discuss his recent book Welcome the Wretched: In Defense of the “Criminal Alien”. Then, she speaks with Schuyler Mitchell, writer and fact checker based in Brooklyn, to discuss her recent piece in The Baffler entitled "Pinkwashing the Timeline". First, Emma runs through updates on the violent crackdown by police (and Zionist mobs) on UCLA’s anti-war encampment, Blinken’s visit to Israel ahead of a likely invasion of Rafah, Israeli settler attacks on Palestinian aid, the House’s bogus antisemitism bill, South Dakota abortion rights, Trump’s response to encampment raids, the death of a SECOND Boeing whistleblower, Amazon labor violations, and devastating floods in Kenya, before parsing through the rage-inducing coverage of the violent attacks on anti-war peaceful demonstrations on college campuses, with some help from the poorly-executed propaganda of the NYPD. César García Hernández then joins, diving right into the evolution of anti-immigrant rhetoric in the US, with the Reagan administration’s campaign for the War on Drugs recentering the narrative around crime, a position that mainstream Democrats like Bill Clinton and then-Senator Joe Biden would quickly assimilate to. Expanding on this, Hernández looks to the Obama Administration’s continuation of this narrative, with a regime of deportation framed around ideas like “Felons not Families” as he and Emma tackle the Democrats’ constant race to the right on immigration in a supposed (but never successful) pitch to GOP voters. After parsing through the central role that migrant labor plays in this political battle, they step back to assess the era of anti-immigrant rhetoric that came before the War on Drugs, with serious penalties for illegal entry and reentry stemming from the racist immigration laws on the books from the start of the 20th Century. Schuyler Mitchell then walks Emma through the concept of “pinkwashing,” or the dressing up of violent ideology in socially accepted liberal values, looking at Israel’s insistence on presenting itself as a progressive haven – in juxtaposition to their narrative of the “savage” Palestinians. Mitchell and Emma then look at a little classic Israeli liberal TV as they parse through the obvious homophobia and transphobia of Eretz Nehederet’s parody of Columbia students as a pitch-perfect example of Israel’s hypocrisy, before wrapping up with the role pinkwashing plays in Israel’s simultaneous self-victimization and self-valorization.
And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they discuss the typical “savages” arguments being made against Gazans, the NYPD’s propaganda launch in the wake of their violent raid on Columbia students, and watch JD Vance fall for the most obvious bait from Kaitlan Collins. Krystal Ball unpacks her cohost’s obvious fascism, Pete Cresswell reflects on the tradition of campus occupations, and America from México discusses transphobia on the left. Josh from Virginia breaks down the crackdown on UNC’s anti-war protests, the MR Team breaks down the outrageous “outside agitators” narrative with some help from the GOP’s big guns, and Kristi Noam struggles to come back from boasting about the murder of a 14-month-old dog, plus, your calls and IMs!

3329 - Mail Carrier Rebellion; The War Over The FTC & The Republican House Fissure w/ Tyler Vasseur, David Dayen

3329 - Mail Carrier Rebellion; The War Over The FTC & The Republican House Fissure w/ Tyler Vasseur, David Dayen

It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Tyler Vasseur, letter carrier and shop steward in the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), Branch 9, to discuss his recent piece in Labor Notes entitled "Momentum for Open Bargaining Grows in the Letter Carriers." Then, Sam speaks with David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect, to discuss his recent piece outlining the new FTC rule regarding non-compete clauses, co-authored with Luke Goldstein. First, Sam runs through updates on escalating violence by police and Zionists against anti-war protesters, Netanyahu’s imminent invasion of Rafah, the Federal Reserve, Biden drug policy, state abortion bans, New York’s special election for Congress, Johnson and Johnson’s talc settlement, and labor rights, before watching Mike Johnson and Marjorie Taylor Greene trade shots ahead of a potential motion to vacate the Speakership. Tyler Vasseur then joined, first outlining NALC’s union structure and role as one of four postal unions, before exploring the progressive division between the unions – including the desynchronization of their contracts –  under the US’ shift into neoliberalism at the end of the 20th Century. Expanding on this, Vasseur explores the concept of “open bargaining,” and what it would mean in terms of activating and mobilizing NALC’s base of workers, as well as creating a much more transparent negotiating process. After walking through the major forces driving NALC members’ attempt at reform, and touching on the major roles of the US pre-funding mandate for the USPS and the 2008 Financial crisis in crippling industry wages, Tyler wraps up with the inspiring factor of the ongoing union renaissance in the US, and how this project has already begun to reshape organizing efforts within NALC. David Dayen and Sam then look to the absurd evolution of the “non-compete” contract clause, first popularized as a tool to prevent the spread of company secrets among executives, and now used to constrain some 30 million workers in industries from dog grooming to fast food. After expanding on the expansive chunk of our economy crippled by non-compete clauses, David walks us through the ongoing legal battle to overturn the bipartisan ban, how the legacy of Antonin Scalia looms large over this topic, and why the Supreme Court’s bogus “Major Questions” Doctrine is central to these arguments. After expanding on the likely evolution of this court battle, Dayen wraps up with a brief update on Live Nation’s attempt to court DC insiders with some help from the free (but evidently not priceless) press.
And in the Fun Half: Sam parses through yesterday’s mass escalation of violence against anti-war student protesters on college campuses across the US, with the NYPD sending a SWAT team to infiltrate the Student occupation of Harold Hall, and police in LA allowing a pro-Israel violent mob assault UCLA protesters, also expanding on the absurd and constant attempts to completely misrepresent these campus protests and the student activists behind them. Jose from Houston calls in with some updates on union business in the transport industry, Marcus from Huntington Beach explores the MAGA takeover of his local government and how to push back, Charlie Kirk shames Zionists for not thinking their grand Jewish conspiracy would come back around to hurt them, and Cory from Florida shares his experiences with the constraints of non-compete clauses. Dave Rubin floats his theory on the jihadists behind public health, and Paul Bet David admonishes a Columbia Student for not knowing NYU’s investment portfolio, in his leadup to platforming George Soros conspiracy, plus, your calls and IMs!
