Hey Poor Podcast Episode 123: The Hey Poor Player PAX East Experience

It’s like a series of System Shock-esque audio logs from PAX.

This isn’t your usual Hey Poor Podcast. This week, we sent occasional investigative reporter and Hey Poor Podcast regular Jay Petrequin to the PAX East show floor, where he spent four days playing games until he wanted to die. His only communication with the outside world (besides, like, Twitter and Facebook and Skype and his phone and stuff) was a series of fascinating audio logs, which we have edited together into a podcast-like configuration suitable for your ears and home. Here you’ll find discussions of every game that mattered, interviews with the developers of some of the most exciting upcoming indie titles, tales of Shake Shack, and more!

(This episode also features Derek McCurry, Ron White, Tim LaMarque and Jesse Ure.)

Talking Points: MOTHERGUNSHIP, Project Warlock, Sinner: Sacrifice For Redemption, Final Fantasy Trading Card Game, Soul Calibur 6, Code Vein, Light Fall, City of the Shroud, Swords of Ditto, Death Garden, Trailblazers, Dead Cells, Sky Noon, Space Junkies, Ultra Space Battle Brawl, Brawlhalla, Just Shapes & Beats, Final Fantasy XIV, the Power Glove concert

As well as interviews with the creators of: Sky Noon, Guacamelee! 2, Sinner: Sacrifice For Redemption, Swords of Ditto,

And another interview with: Eric Knox, AKA eSeamus

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 122: Sy Snootles Settles It In Smash

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 122: Sy Snootles Settles It In Smash

“It Ain’t The Sharpest Cast In The Pod”

This week’s Hey Poor Podcast sees the old crew of I “Steamed Hams Inc.” Coleman, Jay “Sister Confession” Petrequin, and Nathaniel “Nico Naked Nathan” Terencio reunited for the first time in 2018. And not a moment too soon, either – from Battlefront II to Shadow of the Colossus to the never-ending parade of cool Switch ports, there’s lots of games to talk about. Plus: I Coleman can’t find anything bad to say about They Are Billions, Nathan rates the attractiveness of every single Smash Bros. character (#1 may surprise you), Jay tries to analyze the fall of the Marvel Netflix shows, and the POTUS made a half-assed attempt at regulating videogame violence. Oh, and there’s an extended discussion of awful Star Wars side character Sy Snootles, pictured above. We’re sorry, but not that sorry.

(This video features additional music by NPCarlsson.)

Games/Films/Etc of the week: Monster Hunter World, Shadow of the Colossus, The Flame And The Flood Switch port, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Marvel’s The Punisher, Marvel’s Jessica Jones Season Two, The Tick Season 1B, Warhammer Vermintide 2, They Are Billions

Audience Questions: Super Smash Bros. romance tier lists, Solid Snake versus Link meat battle, I’s Sophie’s Choice, Trump’s meeting with videogame devs, favorite ethnic food that’s not your ethnicity

The News: Battlefront II swaps awful loot boxes for only-marginally-less-awful regular microtransactions, the March Nintendo Direct, a lot of Smash Bros. speculation

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 121: Black Panther, Though

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 121: Black Panther, Though

“Some people are a waste of perfectly good carbon.”

This week on the Hey Poor Podcast, I “Incredibly Sick” Coleman tries unsuccessfully to hide the fact that he’s sick, Nathan “No Ding Dong Talk” Terencio misses the good ol’ days of tag team fighting games, and Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is perhaps the most disappointing HD remake of all time. Oh, also: the ESRB made it clear that it has no interest in dealing with the loot box gambling issue, and President Game Show Host thinks mass shootings are caused by unregulated access to videogames. Oh well. At least Black Panther was awesome.

(Note: there’s no way we could discuss the major news of the last week without getting political, so skip the news section if that’s an issue for you. As always, views expressed on the Hey Poor Podcast reflect only the views of those who express them and are not representative of Hey Poor Player as an organization. That goes double for anything Nathan says about Tony the Tiger.)

Games/Films/Etc of the week: Black Panther [SPOILERS FROM 7:00 TO 37:58], Dragon Ball FighterZ, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition

Audience Questions: most anticipated games, brussels sprouts

The News: the ESRB responds to loot boxes with a big pile of nothing, the President of the United States plans to go after violent videogames

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 120: The 25 Best Games Of 2017

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 120: The 25 Best Games Of 2017

The games that made us happy in a year full of sad

On this week’s episode of the Hey Poor Podcast, we assemble an all-star cast of Hey Poor Player contributors to count down our official ranking of the 25 best games of the year. Host I “RUINER” Coleman is joined by Jay “Pyre” Petrequin, Nathaniel “Rakuen” Terencio, Jonathan “Uncharted: Lost Legacy” Trussler, and Dougie “Dream Daddy” Powell to discuss the games that made us laugh, the games that made us cry, the games that did something truly unique, and the tried-and-true games that just did what they did with style and excellence.

Strap in, folks, because we’ve got two and a half hours of lively discussion. We’ve got a diverse list of games and plenty of entries you might not expect – in fact, we’ve even got more than a few entries that we don’t all agree on! Along the way, we’ll talk about why those games deserve their place on this list, why a game’s business model and update structure can be at least as important as its content, which games spoke to each contributor the most and why, and how (at least according to the scumbaggiest parts of our comments section) this was a particularly good year for the Jewish Conspiracy which, as we all know, marches on.

Just want the games? Look elsewhere on the site for a condensed list with shorter blurbs written by every member of the site. You can see the list by clicking here! Have a Happy New Year, and be sure to milk…that thing that we ask you to milk. You know the one.

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 119: Rudolph’s Cornucopia Of Madness

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 119: Rudolph’s Cornucopia Of Madness

“I love that heartwarming family special about ripping all the teeth straight out of a dude’s head.”

This week on the Hey Poor Podcast, we talk about Last Jedi spoilers. Seriously. This is not a joke or a bit – we spoil the whole dang movie. Still, that’s no reason not to curl up by the fire with a glass of nog or nog substitute and listen to I “Snow Miser” Coleman and Jay “Heat Miser” Petrequin discuss why Star Wars‘ eighth episode is easily one of the best movies of the year, extol the merits of DOOM‘s Switch port (now that Bethesda’s bothered to fix some of the more glaring issues), catch up on some of the year’s best games, movies, books, and music; and review Bridge Constructor Portal which, to the surprise of no one who was actually paying attention, did not turn out to be a stealth reveal for Half Life 3. Yeah. People really thought that. All this and more, on the Hey Poor Podcast!

Games/Films/Etc of the week: Star Wars: EPISODE VIII – The Last Jedi [SPOILERS FOR THE LAST JEDI FROM 11:11 TO 38:00], Jay’s final thoughts on Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Splatoon 2’s new maps, catching up on Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn, the Monster Hunter World beta, the DOOM Switch port, Pyre, Bridge Constructor Portal

Audience Questions: favorite book, favorite movie, favorite song/album of 2017; favorite holiday food

The News: PUBG is broken, future of the Xbone

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 118: My Dinner With Pikachu

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 118: My Dinner With Pikachu

“This is why we fight, Charmander. It’s not so that we can win. It’s so that, for however brief a moment, we can inflict pain on a world that will not let us end.”

On this week’s episode of the Hey Poor Podcast, an innocent discussion about Pikachu’s new found ability to speak English in Pokemon The Movie: I Choose You becomes a tale of nihilism, despair, and the fruitless belief that something good is coming. Because videogames! Join I “Detective Pikachu (English Dub)” Coleman, Nathan “Gigafarts” Terencio, and Jay “Archie Peglio” Petrequin as we dunk on Justice League, try and fail to get Neir: Automata’s garbage PC port to work, wish that Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon could be more fun than they are, and discuss the endless bitter saga of EA being terrible. All this and more, on the only podcast that features Pikachu asking of a cruel God: “Where is my blast? From whence comes my off again?”

Games/Films/Etc of the week: Justice League, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Steven Universe: Save The Light, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Ayo: A Rain Tale, Final Fantasy XV Multiplayer DLC, Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You!, Rage Quest, Nier: Automata’s broken-ass PC port, Fallout: New Vegas

Audience Questions: humor that always works, non-controversial gaming opinions, favorite Thanksgiving food

The News: EA ruins Battlefront II and blames it on Pink Darth Vader, Paladins tries their hand at loot box badness, EA doesn’t think singleplayer games can succeed, Pokemon centers are coming to the US
