    Driven to apathy

    Driven to apathy

Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Tech For Good Live podcast!

The world is on fire, so of course we’re spending our time talking about tech for good. That’s fine. We’re all making good choices here.

This week's show is what they call “a real humdinger”.  We’re going to be talking about “Introspective Inner Development Goals”. Not sure what that means, but they’re all pretty powerful players on a Scrabble board.

The US Supreme Court, also tentatively titled “Rent-a-Fascist Inc.” have passed another judgement and in other news, Japan has launched a wooden satellite. That sounds fun.

Host Bex is joined by Tech For Good Live team members Greg Ashton and Paul Jakubowski.

Our special guest joining us this week to talk about the news is Georgia Iacovou, a freelance tech policy writer and creator of the excellent Horrific/Terrific newsletter.

Georgia will be with us again on the next episode, where we will be talking about being a content writer in the data ethics and civic tech spaces, working in the content moderation space, and how social media is effed right now.

    Discussed in this episode:

    Good story of the week

Could the introspective Inner Development Goals help to break down the barriers for the UN Sustainable Development Goals:

Can the Inner Development Goals help us create a more sustainable future? - Positive.News

Bad news story of the week

It's unclear whether this is bad news yet but the US Supreme Court heard arguments on whether laws on Texas and Florida could come into force. These would allow the states to force social media companies to not take down certain content:

Justices sceptical of Tex., Fla. laws that bar platforms from deleting content  - Washington Post

    And finally

Japan to launch world’s first wooden satellite to combat space pollution - The Guardian

    Data-Harvesting Horror Show

Hello and welcome to yet another episode of the Tech for Good Live podcast. It’s a podcast all about using technology to have a positive social impact.

In this episode we are talking about the steps that Meta is taking around political content in what is an astoundingly important year across the world for elections. Is Zuck continuing on his mission to destroy the world, or are there some positive steps?

We recorded this on Valentine’s Day, so this means we are talking about AI partners… which is a thing apparently.

And we’ll be talking about a law that Australia passed that forbids employers from contacting workers after hours, with penalties including jail time for bosses who do the wrong thing.

Jonny Rae-Evans is your host this week and he is joined by Fay Schofield.

Our special guest for this episode is Emma Ockleford. Emma runs a company called Outcomes Matter that supports Local Authorities through leveraging emerging technology, focusing on strengths, and driving innovation. Emma will join us again in the next episode to talk more in depth about the work Outcomes Matter do.

    This week’s topics:

Good story of the week: Meta sorting their shit out ahead of an election?!

Instagram will stop recommending political content - NBC News

Meta says it will label AI-generated images on Facebook and Instagram - AP News

Bad news story of the week:

Valentine's Day special… Your AI Girlfriend Is a Data-Harvesting Horror Show - Gizmodo

    Mozilla study mentioned in article

EVA AI Chat Bot & Soulmate

    And finally

    Australia’s “Right To Disconnect” law.

Australia passes Right To Disconnect law, including (for now) jail time for bosses who email after-hours - The Register

    Library Love

    Library Love

Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Tech for Good Live podcast. If you’re new here, it’s a podcast all about using technology to have a positive impact on the world.

Uncanny valley resus-puppet Mark Zuckerberg stood up in congress, turned to face the parents of children that Meta has allowed to come to harm, and apologised to them. It was a rare opportunity to see the humanity in Zuck’s programming. Normal service has now returned and Meta is back to harming your children.

Taylor Swift continues to be a successful, powerful woman, so of course X (Twitter…) was flooded with AI porn featuring her likeness because oh my god the worst people on earth own and live on that platform.

And in some positive news, we’ll be talking about the social media star helping people fall in love with libraries.

    This week’s topics:

    Good story of the week:

Mark Zuckerberg apologies to parents for what Facebook/Meta did to their children:

Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg apologises to families in fiery US Senate hearing - BBC News

    But does this change anything?:

5 key takeaways from Meta, TikTok, X, Snap’s Congressional hearing on kids’ online safety - The Drum

Bad news story of the week:

More from the hellmouth also known as X. Taylor Swift continues to be attacked purely for being a successful woman. This time with AI porn images shared on the platform:

X is blocking Taylor Swift searches... barely - The Verge

Taylor Swift deepfakes spark calls in Congress for new legislation - BBC News

But the culprit is doxxed after bragging he would never be caught:

Taylor Swift Fans Track Down ‘Culprit’ Who Shared ‘Explicit Pictures’ - Womansera

    And finally

The social media star helping people fall in love with libraries - Positive.News

    Content Warning:

This podcast includes discussion of Child Sexual Exploitation, listener discretion is advised.

Hello and welcome back to the Tech for Good Live podcast.

If you joined us for the last episode you’ll have heard from the wonderful and very lovely Roy.

A long time design and tech entrepreneur, he had a second career as a Higher Ed educator teaching in UK, Europe and China.

His third career was as a Senior Digital Forensic Investigator, using tech skills to recover and interpret digital data for use as prosecution evidence.

We’ll be talking about a topic that was the main part of Roy’s work, which is Child Sexual Exploitation, so it might be a tough, but important listen.
