    Damon West "Be The Coffee Bean", a former starting college quarterback at the University of North Texas, shares his story of overcoming addiction and incarceration. USA Today says Damon West is the modern day Shawshank Redemption. He was sentenced to 65 years in prison for his involvement in organized criminal activity of breaking into homes to feed his meth addiction. However, he had an awakening during his incarceration that arose from his conversation with a lifer about the prison yard being a boiling pot of water. Damon emerged as a changed man. He is now a Criminal Justice college professor, internationally known keynote speaker, and international bestselling author of "The Coffee Bean: A Simple Lesson To Positive Change." He shares his story of redemption and inspires others to transform their lives. The Coffee Bean story has inspired thousands from Wal-Mart, State Farm, to sports teams such as the Dallas Cowboys, Clemson, Georgia, Alabama and others. The U.S. Army has even incorporated the #beacoffeebean mindset into their resilience training. Damon West discusses the flaws in the American criminal justice system, including the power of prosecutors and the lack of jury understanding. He shares his experience of being sentenced to 65 years in prison and the shock and realization that followed. Myra Mabry, a former OB-GYN, shares her journey into addiction and the consequences she faced. She started using opioids to manage migraines during medical school and residency. As her addiction progressed, she began writing prescriptions for herself and others, including her nurse with whom she had an affair. Myra lived a double life, excelling in her career while struggling with addiction. Eventually, she was arrested and sentenced to four and a half years in prison. Throughout her journey, Myra experienced the support of her family and the White Collar Support Group. Myra Mabry reflects on her time in prison and the lessons she learned. She realized that no matter the circumstances, she would be okay. She adapted to the challenges and found ways to stay positive and motivated.     In this episode of the Nightmare Success in and Out podcast, host Brent Cassity interviews Sam Mangel, a high profile federal prison consultant who shares his jarring personal experience of going through the federal criminal justice system. Sam woke up in he early morning with a swarm of FBI agents at his door. He had no idea why they were there. They handcuffed him and put him in the back of the car giving him barley enough time to yell out to his wife to call an attorney. Sam shares how unprepared he was to handle all that was before him. The attorney told Sam he would receive probation. At the day of sentencing the judge went outside the guidelines and sentenced him to 5 years and immediately remanded him into custody. He then went through what is called "diesel therapy" on buses for weeks. The conversation covers topics such as the initial shock of the arrest, the importance of the pre-sentencing report, and the challenges of navigating the prison system. He emphasizes the importance of staying out of trouble and finding ways to cope with the harsh realities of prison. After his release, Sam found a passion to help people like him to navigate through their nightmare using what he learned through his own experience.     Innocent Teenager Coerced Confession for Murder and Rape. Jeffrey Deskovic

    Jeff Deskovic shares his story of being wrongfully convicted of murder and rape as a 16-year-old teenager and spending 16 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. The miscarriage of justice is horrifying, along with the challenges and dangers he faced in prison. Jeff entered a men's maximum-security prison for a life sentence at the age of 17. He goes through the disappointment of seven denied appeals until year 16 the Innocent Project takes his case and frees him with DNA. The original perpetrator confesses and had murdered a schoolteacher while Jeff was imprisoned. He discusses the challenges he faced during his time in prison, including limited contact with loved ones and the loss of his grandmother. Jeff recounts his numerous appeals and the disappointment of each denial. He describes the moment he learned of his impending release and the mixed emotions he experienced. Jeff reflects on the difficulties of reentry, including the social stigma and the struggle to find employment. Despite the challenges, Jeff emphasizes the importance of perseverance, having a realistic plan, and never giving up. He says to never lose sight of your goal. He shares his advocacy work and the establishment of the Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice that has freed 14 people.
