In the last year of my uncle Alasdair’s life he read excerpts from his favourite books to me - as we sat together at his home in Glasgow. These recordings are very special to me and I want to share them with you. I hope you enjoy them.

Gothic Novels: Nightmare Abbey
Alasdair describes the concept of the Gothic novel and rereads the first chapter of Nightmare Abbey by Thomas Love Peacock. This satirical novella was originally published in 1818 and was among the many influences on Alasdair's own Gothic novel Poor Things.
