Faking It: An SFX Podcast Gayle Martin

Christmas is problematic. It brings with it a sackful of emotions and expectations for us to either sift through, or ignore. And for a short time, it tries to cover our pain, disappointment, and even our sins with a blanket of pristine (and often fake) snow.

That's why, for this episode, I decided to cover films that cater to those of us who prefer to dissent from this cheerful facade...and get down to the sharp, brass tacks hidden mischievously beneath it.

So let's snuggle up together and discuss something fake that we can really get behind: special effects, and the stories they help us tell.

Early makeup artists were pioneers who cobbled together monsters with little more than food products, grease paint, and perseverance. But as film itself evolved and changed, they had to adapt with it.

In the first part of this two-part series, we'll follow the path that these early innovators carved out, starting in the early days of silent film and concluding at the end of the 1950s.
