Join Grace Fowler PhD, as she makes sense of pop culture and all things Internet. So much of the content we consume can be looked at through the lens of psychology and teach us more about the world/ourselves. Each week, she breaks down a different show, movie, album, or Internet trend and pairs it with relevant research from the field of psychology. Sit back, relax, and enjoy each episode!

Mini 21: Sunk Cost Fallacy
This week's mini-sode is about the sunk cost fallacy. This cognitive bias can make it hard to leave or give up on a bad situation because we get stuck on all the past costs. I cover some related biases and tips on how to get around this fallacy.

#89: Stalking in Baby Reindeer
CW: stalking, sexual assault, transphobia, homophobia
Baby Reindeer is a show based on the real-life experiences of Richard Gadd. The show portrays a young man's struggle with his identity and relationships whilst being stalked by an older woman. In this episode, I talk about the characteristics of women who stalk, why men tend to underreport being stalked, as well as some of the other major themes in the show.

#89: Suicidal Ideation in Vanderpump Rules
CW: suicide, suicidal ideation
As Season 11 of VPR wraps up, I had to discuss the very odd way in which the show handled a cast member endorsing suicidal ideation during the season. Bravo has never been that good at handling topics related to mental health, so I guess I have to come in and do some clean up 😅

#88: Factitious Disorder in The Act
CW: discussions of sexual assault, child abuse, fantasies of child exploitation, and murder
I'm back with a discussion of the story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard. In this episode I explore the differences between the fictional show and the real story, as well as discuss the disorder at the heart of this tragic tale: Munchausen's by Proxy or as the DSM calls it, Facticious Disorder Imposed on Another.

#87: Gender Roles in Barbarian
CW: discussions of sexual assault
A fun surprise: a horror film episode in January! I had to talk about Barbarian, one of the most interesting horror movies I have seen in a while. In this episode, I talk about some research regarding gender differences around perceptions of safety, like how Tess and Keith approach the situation in the film differently.

#86: Jordan Peterson Made a Music Video (and I have to talk about it!)
CW: discussions of sexual assault, pedophilia
It's time to once again talk about my nemesis: Jordan B. Peterson. He released a music video called "The Postmodernist Drinking Song" and it's one of the most incomprehensible pieces of content I've ever consumed. I had to talk about it with someone!
