The Unfruitful Side of Wealth The Graciously Defined Podcast

    • Christianity

Welcome to today's episode where we explore a thought-provoking concept: the peril of placing our security in wealth and the pride it can breed. Straight from the book of Amos. Join us as we condemn the exploitation of the poor, the allure of idolatry, and the disregard for God's commands. We'll spotlight how this false sense of security in wealth can not only foster pride but also unleash unforeseen consequences. Tune in as we dissect the scripture and offer insights to guide us back to a balanced perspective on wealth and humility.

8:30 - 5 things pride produces in our lives

Pride leads to shame. Proverbs 11:2 states “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Pride leads to arguments. Proverbs 13:10 states “Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

Pride will be punished. Proverbs 16:5 states “The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.

Pride ends in destruction. Proverbs 16:18 states “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Pride cuts us off from God and others. Luke 18:9-14 states “To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

12:35 - Pride produces more dead fruit.

False Worship Amos 4:4 states “Come to Bethel, and transgress; to Gilgal, and multiply transgression; bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes every three days.

Complacency Amos 4:6 states I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and lack of bread in all your places, yet you did not return to me,” declares the Lord.

Ungratefulness or Dissatisfaction Amos 4:7-8 states I also withheld the rain from you when there were yet three months to the harvest; I would send rain on one city, and send no rain on another city; one field would have rain, and the field on which it did not rain would wither so two or three cities would wander to another city to drink water, and would not be satisfied, yet you did not return to me,” declares the Lord.

Faith Misplaced or Hopelessness Amos 4:9 states I struck you with blight and mildew; your many gardens and your vineyards, your fig trees and your olive trees the locust devoured; yet you did not return to me,” declares the Lord.

Rebellion or Self-Righteousness Amos 4:11-13 goes on to repeat the same things judgment and condemnation, this time though God basically says “Prepare to meet your maker” The final majorly unproducing fruit found in the pride of wealth is rebellion.

24:15 - Money and Wealth can lead you astray if you don’t know

1. What it truly means in the bible.

2 How to steward it.

3. How god wants to bless you with it by learning how to bless others first.
