Hosts Ayilisha and Ashwinii speak with Harini V, a young bilingual poet, the former lead coordinator of the NLB Young Writers’ Circle (an interest group under the National Library Board), and a writing enthusiast who has been conducting Tamil writing workshops like Penachudar to encourage young and new writing talents. 🤓🤓🎤🎤🌊📖Can we make a future by pursuing Tamil Literature and Linguistics? In this episode, Ayilisha and Ashwini follow the lives of two interesting youths: Helen Dominic a Tamil Linguistics PhD candidate, researching on the sociocultural forces shaping varieties of Tamil in Diaspora communities,  at Georgetown University, and the enterprising 16-year-old Saranya Mushila, a Tamil enthusiast who finds interest in writing Tamil poems, short stories, and very recently, plays too, along with running a YouTube channel together with her peers that aims to make Tamil literature accessible to all. Ayilisha and Ashwini explore the trajectories of these two talents and find out what led them to take the Tamil writing and research journey.

🎤🎤🌊🤓🤓📖Translating literature is not just challenging in its own right, but translated works often open up and reveal new textual meanings that play out differently in varied cultural contexts. How important and relevant is the translation, especially for local Tamil literary works? Who is the mythical English reader we are translating for? What are the challenges translators face? In this episode, our hosts Ayilisha and Ashwinii, budding translators themselves, share their thoughts about translations and engage deeper with Kavitha Karuum, who has extensively worked in the media and translation industry, and whose translations have been featured in projects by The National Library Board, National Arts Council, Poetry Festival Singapore and Words Without Borders. Also, look out for a snippet from Singapore’s veteran translator, P. Krishnan, known for his Tamil translation of the Shakespeare play, Macbeth, when he spoke about his experiences in a documentary made by Vaasagar Vattam (Singapore) & Vallinam (Malaysia).

A unique aspect of the local Tamil literature scene is that women form a significant part of the writing community. They have made their mark across different types of literary genres (i.e, poetry, short stories, etc.). However, has this effectively translated into making the woman’s voice heard in their works? Moreover, do female writings always have to be feminist in nature? What unspoken hesitations do female writers have when they write on female-oriented subjects? Hosts Ashwinii and Ayilisha have a conversation with female writer Rama Suresh to gain some insights into the feminine psyche. In addition, the hosts will take to analysing in detail “Naan Kolai Seyyum Pengal”(The Women I Murder), a short story collection by Latha (K. சிங்கப்பூர் தமிழ் இலக்கிய வெளியின்  சிறப்பம்சம் என்னவென்றால், பெண் எழுத்தாளர்கள் இங்கு ஒரு குறிப்பிடத்தக்க அங்கமாக உள்ளனர். பல்வேறு வகையான இலக்கிய வடிவங்களில் (அதாவது, கவிதை, சிறுகதைகள், முதலியன) பெண் எழுத்தாளர்கள் தங்கள் முத்திரையை பதித்து வந்துள்ளனர். இருப்பினும்,  இப்படைப்புகளில் பெண்ணின் குரல் ஓங்கி ஒலிக்கிறதா? அவ்வாறு ஓங்கி ஒலித்து பெண்ணியம் பேசினால் தான் பெண் எழுத்தா ? பெண்ணின் அந்தரங்கங்களை எழுதும்போது பெண் எழுத்தாளர்கள் என்னென்ன தயக்கங்களை சந்திக்கின்றனர்? இத்தயக்கங்கள் அவர்களின் எழுத்துக்களை எவ்வாறு பாதிக்கின்றன? தொகுப்பாளர்கள் அஷ்வினி மற்றும் ஆயிலிஷா பெண் எழுத்தாளர் ராமா சுரேஷுடன் உரையாடுகிறார்கள், பெண்ணின் ஆன்மாவைப் பற்றி அலசி ஆராயப்போகிறார்கள். மேலும், 2008 ஆம் ஆண்டில் தமிழ் புனைகதைக்கான சிங்கப்பூர் இலக்கிய பரிசை வென்ற லதா (க. கனகலதா) எழுதிய சிறுகதைத் தொகுப்பான “நான் கொலை செய்யும் பெண்கள்”  பற்றியும்  விரிவாக திறனாய்வு  செய்ய போகிறார்கள். ஹரிணி வி எழுதிய "நான் ஆணாகப் பிறந்திருந்தால்" கவிதை வாசிப்பும் பாகத்தில் இடம்பெறுகிறது. 🎤🎤🌊💃🏾💃🏾🤓🤓📖

We talk to Abhi Krish, the founder of Eli Puli and Nool Monsters that create bilingual (Tamil and English) learning resources for children and Azhagunila, the author of children's Tamil picture books such as 'Kondama Kendama' and 'Melissavum Merlionum'. As creatives of Singapore Tamil literature for children, they share with us how Tamil children’s literature has evolved over time to be more attractive, illustrating contemporary issues for children. The episode also features a discussion of Singapore Tamil writer Sithuraj Ponraj's Kountilyan Sathuram, a book filled with adventure that follows 3 10-year-olds who use science to solve a mystery that their teacher has gotten trapped in, inside a forest in Kalimantan.
