Nature Talks Podcast- The Flint Water Crisis

The Flint Water crisis was not a natural environmental crisis. This crisis began when the Michigan government attempted to manipulate the environment in order to cut government spending. What resulted was the violation of the SDWA, as local officials lied to the public, and denied environmental science by allowing them to consume contaminated water. Furthermore, this crisis reveals the institutionalized environmental racism that disproportionately impacted poor families. It is also clear that this issue requires an analysis of political economy as both federal and local governments had to restructure their institutions in response to this crisis.
