Relax Your FOMO And Other English Acronyms Ep 315

Relax Your FOMO And Other English Acronyms Ep 315

Today we will talk about English acronyms and abbreviations. This is something we all experience daily, it might be on the TV, radio your email or in an SMS (- did you spot the acronyms?) and given how many acronyms I’ve been listening to on the news lately I think it’s worth spending a time in our short English podcast lessons discussing them.

    English Acronyms
Acronyms have been a part of our language for a long time. Did you know the official name of the Roman Empire dating back to before the Republic was **Senatus Populusque Romanus**, frequently abbreviated to **SPQR**. You can still see it on the manhole covers in Rome.
We all use [common acronyms](https://abbreviations.yourdictionary.com/articles/common-accronyms.html) on our phones ROFL (Roll on the floor laughing out loud) and in emails to save some effort on typing and we all use spoken acronyms to save on talking effort RIP (Rest in peace). They help speed up communication when using common English phrases.
We use acronyms and abbreviations all the time in our everyday English, without even thinking about them. This can be difficult for new language learners, as it’s often difficult to guess the words and the meaning in such a short sequence of unhelpful letters.

    English Conversation Harvey Weinstein
People learn new languages for many reasons. It might be for work, for pleasure, for school, or maybe just for the challenge.
Regardless of our motivation, at some point we all need something for everyday conversation **filler** that we can talk about, which is a topical current event. So today is a good example of what that might be, and the tone and vocabulary used is informal English.
It’s good English listening practice, but it’s also something you might use yourself in a practice conversation.

Improve Your Spoken English-Learn Grammar With Us Today Ep 312

Today we will practice some English grammar, specifically around comparative adjectives. Given all the coronavirus reporting, we thought we would explain the English vocabulary being used, things like **Biggest**, **Strongest** and when this language is suitable and correct.

Improve Your English - Learn Grammar
There seem to be a lot of extreme events being reported on the TV at the moment, from the financial markets to the impact corona virus is having on people and their lives. Interestingly, even native English-speaking reporters whose job it is to use the English language to explain what is going on are not always using the correct English language!
Along the way the reporters have been using more extreme language comparing the events to past events, where, for example, a market crash in 2008 was big, but the 1987 crash was bigger and now we are experiencing the biggest crash since the 1929 crash.
So today we cover some examples of comparative adjectives and the rules for using them in everyday English conversation.

How To Learn English Speaking While Making Pancakes Ep 311

How To Learn English Speaking While Making Pancakes Ep 311

We get a lot of emails and messages on Facebook asking us **How to learn English speaking?** questions. The quick answer is lots of listening to English being spoken by native English speakers and then getting familiar with hearing English being spoken so you understand much more than you can speak.

    How To Learn English Speaking
Learning any language, even your first language, comes from listening to lots of people speaking in that language, and observing and understanding the meaning of the sounds you are hearing, learning that those sounds are important and need to stored in your longer term memory and learning to mimic the sounds you hear. You start by practising the words in your head, then alone, and then when you're ready you practice the words with other people.
You see this happening all the time. Look at any small child. Point at something, say the word (and repeat over and over) and eventually the child associates the words with objects and actions. What we do here at Adept English is more sophisticated and takes advantage of the fact you are not leaning about languages from scratch. But it’s still the same basic process.
If you want a longer answer on how to learn to speak English, then you should check out our [free English language course](http://7rules.adeptenglish.com/), which goes into much more detail about our “Listen & Learn” system of learning to speak English fluently.

Online Language Learning With English Podcasts-Covid19 Vocabulary Ep 310

Online Language Learning With English Podcasts-Covid19 Vocabulary Ep 310

With just about everyone now talking about the [SARS-CoV-2 (Virus type), COVID 19 (The disease)], more commonly known to all; of us as **The [coronavirus]**. It was only a matter of time before we mention it in our podcasts. So today we discuss the typical English vocabulary used when talking about COVID-19. We also describe what stage the UK is in preparing for the disease.

Online Language Learning With English Podcasts
The UK is a little behind many countries in terms of the spread of the disease. So we should have had more time to prepare for the inevitable increase in infections. But as usual, the people responsible for protecting us from this event did not use the extra time to prepare. So we are hearing about a “plan” that already seems out of date, and lots of discussions are taking place about how things will happen.
What we know is, just like in China and Italy and other countries we see on the news, the UK intends to “self isolate” (ask people who may have COVID-19, to stay at home) so they can presumably infect their family members and neighbours.
If that happens, then earning money to pay the bills will become a real problem for many people in the UK. [10% of the UK’s adults have no savings], so how they will survive being away from work for a month or more is unknown.
For all the problems with being at home, and all the worries you might have, it may well be good advice to focus on something you might enjoy. Maybe [learning]to speak English?
