    Moming With Miya is back for Season 2, a Pregnancy and Parenting Series. Join the Host Tamiya as she and special guest NICU Nurse Chelsea Samms speak about life in the NICU from both a nurse and a parent's perspective. Unless there is a medical condition found early on, most expectant moms are not spoken to about the NICU and if your baby unexpectedly needs to go there what to expect.

    Tamiya a mother of 4, wife, doula, breastfeeding peer educator, and the founder of The Motherhood Academy.  The Motherhood Academy (TMA) is a NJ Nonprofit with a mission to educate, mentor, and support mothers of color though all stages of their pregnancies.  In addition to the Academy's Motherhood 101--crash course in pregnancy and parenting, and mentorship program TMA also hosts Mom's Night In events where mothers can virtually connect with activities, games, and conversations surrounding motherhood.

    Erin Scott is a NJ Licensed Professional Counselor. Erin has experience  in providing therapy services in schools, outpatient , and private practice settings. She  is the CEO and Therapist of her own virtual therapy practice , The Healing Space Counseling and Wellness Center, where she is committed to promoting and facilitating healing in the Black Community. Erin specializes in Maternal Mental Health, Women's Mental Health, and assisting couples in navigating relational concerns. Erin's passion for maternal mental health stems from her own experiences as a Black mother and also being a Maternal Near Miss Survivor.  Erin strives to empower, uplift, support, and  help people create the life they want to live one session at a time.

Join the Host Tamiya as she and special guest Guerline Pierre have an intimate conversation surrounding infant loss, specifically infertility and miscarriage.  Guerline opens up and shares her personal experiences and also shares some words of comfort and encouragement to families who may have or are currently experiencing loss or infertility.

    Born in Jersey City, N.J to Haitian immigrant parents, Guerline M. Pierre, always had deep aspirations to be a public servant and serve the broken and voiceless populations in her very community in New Jersey and globally.  Guerline holds a B.A degree in Public Administration from Bloomfield College and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Montclair State University. During her public health career, she's worked seven years in Maternal and Child Health in East Orange, New Jersey for the Healthy Start Program. Further, she has traveled to the mountains of Peru, Haiti and South Africa to expand her knowledge on sustainable community development and service learning. She has served locally as a volunteer for Literacy Volunteers of America; working with the immigrant community in building client’s reading strategies and forming English conversation groups. 

    In addition, she has successfully coordinated and executed local community health fairs, and  community baby showers with her church congregation and various non- profits, to bring awareness of various health resources.  Ms. Pierre also has worked as a Maternal and Child Health Program Coordinator for a Non-Profit Organization in Trenton, N.J. She also works seasonally for the Migrant Education Program, where she provides social support services to migrant farmers in Southern New Jersey. It was through working with migrant’s families the last seven years, that she had the burning desire to start a nonprofit to address the needs of not only the migrant farm workers, but also the immigrant population. 

    She is deeply passionate about the human experience and wants to continue to make an impact in urban and rural communities to help underserved populations access social and medical services. She has most recently become a postpartum doula in summer 2020 to continue her works as a maternal and child health activist.

    Chelsea Samms was born and bred in Long Island, NY, where she was raised in a very blessed household and developed a fierce swag like no other. She is the middle child of 3 and a true 90s baby at heart. She attended the University of Maryland, College Park and obtained her Bachelor of Science in Community Health in 2014. Here she also cultivated and bolstered her leadership skills by sticking her hands into various extracurricular activities on the campus.  

    Chelsea always knew she wanted to work somewhere in the medical field, but entering college she wasn’t sold on nursing yet. But she managed to find her path into nursing and went on to attend The Johns Hopkins University, School of Nursing after her undergraduate studies. She forged her way through an intense 17-month accelerated BSN program and worked tirelessly to become Chelsea Samms, BSN, RN.  

    After passing her boards in 2016, Chelsea was blessed enough to take her talents across the country to begin her nursing career in Los Angeles, CA at the young age of 23. Countless life lessons were learned during her time in Los Angeles including experiences related to losing a job, starting and ending a business, and her wonderful journey into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Currently residing back home in New York, she continues to seek more knowledge and wisdom within her nursing profession to this day.

She discusses the emotional aspect of feeling like she had failed as a mom when her body “didn’t do” what it was suppose to do and how providers weren’t supportive of her choice. She also talks about the importance of a support and care team who she feels like aided in her Vbac, such as a doula, and black OBGYB.

Join the Host Tamiya as she and special guest Dr. Megan Monroe speak about preparing for an induction of labor.  Pregnant moms are often told that if they do not go into labor usually by 41 weeks and 6 days they will be scheduled for an induction without really being told what that means, the methods of induction and how to prepare.

    Dr. Megan Monroe, MD, MS is a loving sister, daughter and friend training as a resident physician specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Born in Jacksonville, FL, her family moved to New Jersey when she was just six months old. Dr. Monroe earned her undergraduate degree in Community Health from University of Maryland, College Park and remained in the DMV area for her Masters in Physiology from Georgetown University. She returned to New Jersey for her medical degree from Cooper Medical School of Rowan University and is now following her dream of becoming a competent, nurturing, and inclusive Obstetrician

Join the Host Tamiya as she and special guest Melanie speak about the importance and benefits of breastfeeding.  As the Founder of Mamello Lactation Services Melanie also talks about how she got started in birth/breastfeeding work, her own breastfeeding journey, and why representation during lactation support is important, especially for families of color.  On this episode we also discuss each of the different lactation professionals such as Peer Educators, CLCs, and IBCLCs.

    Melanie Hutton is a mom of four; two daughters, ages18 and 13, a son eight years old and her for baby a chinchilla. Melanie has worked in maternal health in various ways starting in 2011 as a peer counselor with the local WIC program. After venturing back into the medical field for a short time she was called back to work specifically with Black  women to combat Black infant and mortality rates in New Jersey. Melanie also has been working toward building her personal practice Mamello Lactation which serves families in Northern New Jersey with Lactation, pregnancy and birth support. In her spare time Melanie enjoys listening to music, hanging out with her children, and enjoying time outdoors.
