Transport Podcast Paul Hutton

With Intertraffic Amsterdam postponed until next March, the official podcast of the event is delivering thought leadership with a series of episodes featuring those who will be at the revised event next year.

In this podcast presenter Paul Hutton chats about the postponement with fellow reporter Kevin Borras who says he was impressed that everyone was given as much warning as possible that the dates would be moved, “It's the right move and you have to applaud it. For the team tasked with making that decision it must have been one of the toughest of not just their professional lives, but their lives full stop. For a small show - if there are 500 visitors and 50 exhibitors - you can move that a bit nearer the time, but with Intertraffic Amsterdam you're looking at 38,000 people coming from all across the world and the best part of 1000 exhibitors across the halls. That's such a gargantuan event that you have to give it the time to move.”

Paul also explains how the original podcast promoting Intertraffic had already been produced when the decision was taken to postpone, so he brings you one conversation from that, with George de Boer of TomTom who explains the Company’s move to focussing on B2B. “We're making sure that we can make data available to… automotive companies. Most of the automotive companies are using either our components or the full stack of navigation in their cars today. Or we can deliver that location tech to enterprises like Microsoft or Uber where they can use it in either their online services like Microsoft in the Azure Cloud, or Uber can use it in the back end, to optimize the routing for the Uber drivers.”

This is a recording of an excellent PTV-led debate about the future of mobility and the use of data to support it, reducing the need for infrastructure building.

The panel debate took place at the ITS World Congress in Singapore and was chaired by SMART Highways editor Paul Hutton.  It featured discussion on better traffic management, budget constraints, politicians' love of "turning dirt" rather than cheaper, quicker, more efficient technology solutions, and the "rush to be second".

The debate, called "Orchestrating mobility in Smart Cities" focused on cities' orchestration of transport modes to deal with the most pressing mobility challenges: congestion, environmental impact and road safety. It started with a presentation about PTV Optima before a debate involving:

This latest edition of our SMART Highways podcast focusses on the latest issue of the magazine, covering smart motorways, other safety features in car and traffic management.

Our cover feature in this issue is all about the topical issue in Britain at the moment – the safety of smart motorways. Given the technology is being copied, or being considered, around the world as a lower-cost way of delivering more capacity, it’s a key issue everywhere. SMART Highways reporter Emma Greedy spoke to key people about the concept, the problems and possible solutions and explained some of her findings to Talking Transport presenter Paul Hutton, the editor of SMART Highways magazine.
