A summary of "What Happened During the Ice Storm"

A summary of "What Happened During the Ice Storm"

In this podcast, I will be summarizing a short story named “What Happened During the Ice Storm”, which was written by Jim Heyen. This story is about some boys that helped rescue pheasants from the farmers and the storm. At first, it was telling about what the ice storm had done. The trees were covered in ice that shattered quickly. Farmers were bringing their livestock into barns. Afterwards, they were skating down gravel roads with clubs in hand. They were ready to harvest the pheasants. The boys also wanted to catch pheasants. When the boys were in front of the pheasants, they were frozen with indecision. They didn’t plan this far and didn’t know what to do next. One of the boys took off his coat and covered some of the weak pheasants like a blanket. The other boys did the same. They started to freeze after taking of their coats.  Afterwards, I believe that they were a bit delusional. This is inferred by the line “toward the warm blurry lights of the house”.

    A summary of 'First Day"

    A summary of 'First Day"

In this podcast, I will be summarizing a short story named “First Day”, which was written by Edward P. Jones. This story is about a girl that was about to start her first day at school. In the morning, her mother even spent an hour doing the narrator’s hair. The narrator tells us why she sees her mother as strict. Her mother took her to a school to register. Unfortunately, the school says that the narrator lives outside of the zone that the school would service. They then, suggested a school near their home. Her mother was quite angry but took her to the other school anyway. When they had to provide documents, her mother pulls out a lot of papers to give to the school. Though, when her mother had to fill out some information, her mother asked a staff for help. She explained how she couldn’t read or write. At that moment, the narrator finally saw the vulnerable side to her mother. The mother that sacrificed her pride just so that her daughter could get a good education.  The line “I don’t know how to read or write, and I’m askin’ you to help me” infers that the mother did not get basic education when she was younger. Which then infers the reason why she wants her daughter to have a good education.

    Summary of "Bread"

    Summary of "Bread"

In this podcast, I will be summarizing a short story named “Bread”, which was written by Margaret Atwood. In the first setting, it seems like a normal morning, because we are eating bread like we would a normal breakfast. There’s a lot of bread and it isn’t very valuable. In the second setting, the bread became extremely valuable. We are starving along with our sister because of a famine. In the third setting, we are in a prison. The bread still has a lot of value because fresh food is hard to find in a prison. In the fourth setting, the bread has different values. For the poor sister, it was very valuable, but to the rich sister, not so much. This is inferred by the line, “There was once two sisters. One rich and had no children, the other had five children and was a widow, so poor that she no longer had any food left”. The rich sister and her husband had no worry for the amount of bread. In the sixth and final setting, the bread is floating on the kitchen table. You are wondering whether you are hallucinating or not. The line “smells like yeast” makes it seem real, but you think that it’s not, because bread does not float.
