Così dissi, e quello levato un gemito mi rispose:
"Laerziade, prole di Zeus; Ulisse dalle molte astuzie,
a farmi male è stata la cattiva sorte di un dio e il vino infinito.
Mi ero steso a dormire nella casa di Circe e poi non pensai,
tornando, di raggiungere per scendere la lunga scala,
ma caddi giù dal tetto a capofitto, e il collo
si distaccò dalle vertebre: l'anima scese giù nell'Ade.
Ora ti supplico in nome di quelli che lasciasti e non sono qui,
tua moglie e tuo padre, che ti nutriva quando eri bambino,
e Telemaco, che tuo solo figlio lasciasti nella tua casa.
Io so che andando via da qui, dalla casa di Ade,
all'isola Eèa ormeggerai la nave ben fatta;
là allora, signore, ti prego di ricordarti di me: di non partire,
di non andare via da me, lasciandomi illacrimato e insepolto.
Che io non diventi per te motivo di ira da parte degli dèi;
ma bruciamo con le mie armi, tutte quante ne ho,
e presso la riva del mare canuto innalzami un tumulo,
ricordo di un uomo infelice, sì che anche i posteri lo sappiano.
Queste cose fa' tu per me, e pianta sul tumulo un remo,
col quale da vivo remavo insieme coi miei compagni"

To bait fish withal: if it will feed nothing else,
it will feed my revenge. He hath disgraced me, and
hindered me half a million; laughed at my losses,
mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my
bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine
enemies; and what's his reason? I am a Jew. Hath
not a Jew eyes? hath not a Jew hands, organs,
dimensions, senses, affections, passions? fed with
the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject
to the same diseases, healed by the same means,
warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as
a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed?
if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison
us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not
revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will
resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian,
what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian
wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by
Christian example? Why, revenge. The villany you
teach me, I will execute, and it shall go hard but I
will better the instruction.
