When the religious expert asked Jesus who his neighbor was, he was attempting to justify his own actions. He was looking for a definition of “neighbor” that included everyone he felt comfortable loving and excluded those he did not. Jesus’s answer was as much for us today as it was for him.

When Simon the sorcerer witnessed the miracles performed by Philip, he did not demonstrate faith in the Word of God; rather, he placed his faith in the miracles themselves.

We’re not told Simon the Pharisee’s purpose for inviting Jesus into his home. We don’t know if he was a sincere seeker like Nicodemus—wanting to truly get to know Jesus, or whether he had some ulterior motive in mind.
