Mormon Movie Reviews - Johnny Lingo (1969)
Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong!
Johnny Lingo (1969)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXIj5zfFsk0
Running time: 23 minutes
Synopsis
Johnny Lingo (1969) is a film often remembered for its exotic setting and cultural backdrop but falls short in its portrayal of morality and gender dynamics. Set on a Pacific island, the movie follows the story of Mahana, a young woman whose worth is measured by her dowry, and Johnny Lingo, a wealthy trader who offers an exorbitant sum for her hand in marriage, surprising the islanders who had previously deemed her worthless.
While the film attempts to convey a message of self-worth and inner beauty, its execution is marred by problematic portrayals of morality and gender roles. The central premise revolves around the idea that a woman's value is determined solely by her dowry, reducing Mahana to a commodity to be bought and sold. This perpetuates harmful stereotypes and reinforces the notion that a woman's worth is contingent upon her monetary value rather than her inherent dignity and humanity.
Furthermore, "Johnny Lingo" is rife with instances of sexism and outdated gender dynamics. Mahana is depicted as meek and submissive, existing solely to fulfill the desires of the male characters around her. Her transformation from a timid young woman to a confident bride is framed as a triumph, but ultimately, it rings hollow in the face of the film's underlying misogyny.
Additionally, the film's portrayal of morality is questionable at best. Johnny Lingo's decision to pay an exorbitant dowry for Tama is framed as a noble gesture, but in reality, it only serves to reinforce the idea that women are objects to be bought and sold. The lack of agency afforded to Tama throughout the film further undermines any attempts at conveying a meaningful moral message.
In conclusion, while "Johnny Lingo" may hold nostalgic value for some viewers, its portrayal of morality and gender dynamics is deeply flawed. By perpetuating harmful stereotypes and reinforcing outdated notions of female worth, the film ultimately fails to deliver a meaningful or uplifting message.

Mormon Movie Reviews: Together Forever (1989) Where LDS Movie Lovers Belong
Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong!
today is January 11, 2024, and what are we going to review
Together Forever (1987)
Link: https://youtu.be/do1tUMzUwTQ?si=C0zynZWsY67rB46i
Running time: 29 minutes
Rating: not rated
Genre: religious drama
A brief summary Summary: This is a presentation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints missionaries use to teach people about families being together forever. Several families who have experienced tragedy are chronicled as well as wayward souls who are brought back to the fold. The end of the film testifies that families can indeed be together forever
Together Forever, was directed by Michael McClean who also contributed several landmark songs to the film such as the eponymous “Together Forever” as well as “Stay with Me,” and “Be that Friend.” It is a series of four different vignettes of couples or individuals who discuss how they found meaning in life through their discovery of Mormonism, oops, I meant to say the plan of salvation.
Although this short film is available on videocassette, the church also broadcast Together Forever on network television. In the beginning of 1989 this film aired in every U.S. city with an LDS mission headquarters.
The film won the Catholic-sponsored Gabriel Award and received an 8 out of 10 on a Neilsen TV survey.
Together forever repeatedly emphasizes the importance of making time for families, it doesn’t deal with the more obvious question, why do we need mormonism for that, again?
This and other similar church videos of this era could be ordered for free through a phone number provided in church purchased TV commercials, viewers could elect to have this and other LDS tapes delivered personally by missionaries instead of through the mail by a postman
These VHS tape orders became known to missionaries as Media referrals. As a full time missionary in the 1990s, I remember getting calls a couple of times a week to hand deliver this specific VHS tape to investigators and deliver a message. They really made missionary work a lot easier.
The most ironic thing about media referrals like together forever, is that the message we gave had little to do with the video! Instead, regardless of what video they requested, we would give the standard missionary first discussion which covered God, Jesus, and never forget, Joseph Smith
Lemme turn up the volume, I think I’m gonna cry…or throw up….
video emphasizes that it is important to make time for families, it doesn’t deal with the more obvious question, why do we need mormonism for that?
Conclusion

Never find out why mom dropped dead
How does a middle aged woman go from tucking her kids in the night before, to stone dead the following morning? I am not a doctor, but I did a little research, and I’m willing to go out on a limb here that mom died from steadying an ark…
Uncle Ben is yet another church movie with a mysterious death. This film reminds me of Cypher in the Snow and the Mailbox where people just die suddenly as a convenient plot device.
No explicit COJCOLDS elements in this film, probably in an effort to make this more appealing to a broad non-LDS audience.
Released in a set

I would love to see a modern remake of this film, but with Uncle Ben’s booze problem replaced by coffee. #Lucifer’sBean
Final Thoughts
But seriously, this film does send a simple, down to earth good message of the importance of taking care of family and the benefits of avoiding excessive alcohol consumption.
