Today is a day to celebrate 2 nutrition stalwarts in Washington State, as we celebrate the retirement of Dr. David Gee (43 years at Central Washington University) and Dr. Ethan Bergman RDN (38 years at Central Washington University). Both have been influential on a state and national level winning awards, conducting research, educating the future dietitian and food service professionals, and being involved as volunteers. When I found out they were retiring, I wanted to jump on and record a podcast episode to thank them for their years of service and give them their flowers

Episode 30 features Hernando Planells

One of the world’s most well-traveled and experienced coaches, Hernando has built a career and reputation on constructing teams and working with them to unlock their inner potential. He has spent the past 20 years working with some of the best athletes (NBA G-League, Slam Ball, Duke University, University of Illinois) and actors on the planet (Adam Sandler, Channing Tatum and more).

Coach H also hosts the Be Contagious Leadership Experience, a highly-rated podcast where his conversations with thought provoking guests share thoughts and experiences pertaining to leadership and inspiration!

We also share the same last name, and so we have a half Colombian and Filipino and a half Cuban and Vietnamese Planells conversing. It felt like I was talking to myself - was a truly a pleasure to chat, and look forward to eventually going on his podcast as well.

Episode 29 features Shawn Pitcher

Shawn is transitioning to tactical nutrition and private practice. He was most recently the Head of sports dietitian at Overtime Elite. He was their first full Dietitian in the league's history and was instrumental in developing their nutrition program. Prior Shawn was at IMG Academy (2019-2022) where he was the performance dietitian for football & soccer. Since 2015, Shawn has had the opportunity to work with multiple levels of athletics. These include Ole Miss (2018), Nationwide Children's Hospital (2017), University of Missouri (2016), Pittsburg State (2016), University of Buffalo (2015) & Buffalo State University (2010-2015).

Episode 28 features Jennifer Okemah

Today, we are going to feature Jennifer Okemah, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist residing in Kirkland, Washington, a surburb of Seattle. She has an additional certification as a Sports Specialist in Dietetics as well as being Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management. She owns a private practice with 4 locations in the Seattle area and has been providing telehealth services since 2018. Her company, Salute Nutrition, PLLC, incorporates the work of RDNs, A Registered Nurse Practitioner and a Personal Trainer. She has been a leader in her field in patient care, mentoring, serving as a preceptor, speaking, creating webinars, writing for nutrition and diabetes blogs as well as authoring scientific publications.

I've known her since 2011 as both worked for the Home Based Primary Care (HBPC programs at our respective VA's (her's in Southern Oregon, and mine in Manhattan at New York Harbor). We've spent time volunteering extensively and now she is full force to be reckoned with when it comes to being an entrepreneur.
