Governments call for fertilizer reductions ahead of global food crisis

The world is set to face a food shortage and crisis due to the compounding effects of a war and a pandemic. Meanwhile, several major governments are pushing for fertilizer emissions reductions to tackle climate change. Critics have called the move insane claiming it will ultimately reduce farmers' yields. Lawmakers in the Netherlands are even looking at buying up the land of the farmers that can't meet emissions reduction targets set out by the European Union.  This episode explores the pollution and emissions issues with synthetic fertilizers, and also their necessity in growing the world's food.

Indigenous leaders fight to protect the Fitzroy River in northern Australia

Indigenous leaders fight to protect the Fitzroy River in northern Australia

Dr. and Professor Anne Poelina is Chair of the Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council, and is working to protect the Fitzroy River from large-scale development. Big agricultural businesses are looking to create a 'food bowl' in the Kimberley Region of West Australia and want to extract massive quantities of water from the Fitzroy River to do so. I talk to Poelina about the concerns Indigenous traditional owners have with industry potentially taking hundreds of gigalitres a year from one of the last strongholds for the endangered saw fish. We  eventually dig into how the hunger for development and economic growth needs to be balanced with Indigenous knowledge and up-to-date, peer-reviewed science.
