Doc Talks: "Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things"

Doc Talks: "Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things"

Our series "Doc Talks" kicks off with the documentary Minimalism that details the journeys of Dan and Ryan into a minimalistic lifestyle. What does it mean to live minimally? It's more than just decorating your home in a black and white color scheme. In this episode we discuss our thoughts about the film and the importance of its message, as well as how we can easily incorporate the principles of minimalism with our yogi lifestyle.

    Ep. 6: Speaking Your Truth

    Ep. 6: Speaking Your Truth

Real talk: honesty is hard to come by. Each day, we tell ourselves and others little lies or withhold how we really feel because we feel it will benefit us or another person. What if we told you that your life could improve by being a little more open and honest about how you feel? In this episode we ponder how speaking your truth, or “satya” in Sanskrit, has helped us grow in our personal and professional lives by opening up through truthful communication with ourselves and those in our lives.

    Cheat Sheet:
-limbs of yoga: 8 branches of yoga that lead to a meaningful and purposeful life
-yamas: one of the limbs of yoga; a guide for ethical behavior when it comes to relationships
-niyamas: one of the limbs yoga; means “self-discipline”
-satya: one of the yamas, referring to honesty and avoiding delusions about reality
-ahimsa: one of the yamas; means “nonviolence”

Ep. 5: Starting a Yoga Practice

Ep. 5: Starting a Yoga Practice

Description: WTF is hot yoga? Vinyasa? Yin? Ashtanga? What happens if I have to fart? On today’s episode, we break down the overwhelming world of yoga, the different styles and their benefits, the different teachers you’ll encounter, weird (yet totally normal) things that happen to everyone in a yoga class, and where the heck to start if you’re brand new or if you’re stuck in a rut.

We all began our yoga journeys in different places, but the common denominator was that we all started somewhere. This episode lifts the veil of how to get yourself into a yoga studio and what types of classes might work for you, as well as what classes might not. None of us practice just one type of yoga: we have found that depending on our minds and bodies on a particular day, we may crave a different style or flow than we did the day before. We also discuss what advice that we as yoga instructors want our students to know about our classes and what to focus on and listen for in classes you attend or what video resources you seek out. In any case, a variety of types of yoga WILL work for you, just as they have worked for us.

    Here’s our cheat sheet:
Hot Yoga: 80-100 degree heated practice
Vinyasa: Each pose moves quickly; poses are connected to the breath in a flow sequence
Yin: Poses are held for several minutes; poses are meant to push, stretch, and lengthen the body
Restorative: Very relaxing; no physical exertion; lots of props (pillows, blocks, and blankets); meditative
Iyengar: uses props to help with alignment in most poses
Ashtanga: Same series of poses taught and practiced in the same order for the same amount of time in each class
Bikram: hot yoga practice with the same poses practiced in the same order each time; has a dress code; not allowed water during the class
