Why Should Christians Care About Criminal Justice? with Matt Martens

When you hear about someone in prison, what typically goes through your head? Maybe it’s, “Good, I’m sure they deserve it,” or maybe it’s more, “What if they’re unfairly there?” Or, maybe you make no assumptions at all. Which is the correct Christian perspective on criminal justice? That’s what we’re discussing today when Matt Martens joins Patrick on the pod! Matt is a trial lawyer, a former federal prosecutor, a legal ethics professor, and an award-winning author of “Reforming Criminal Justice: A Christian Proposal.” He starts by explaining why Christians should care about the criminal justice system in America and provides examples of why the current system is broken. He shares how the Bible offers several guideposts for loving our neighbors as it relates to this area. Plus, is the death penalty biblical? What’s the difference between Christian and pagan justice? How should Christians seek true, biblical reform of the criminal justice system? Listen now!

Marriage: The Recipe for Happiness with Brad Wilcox

Fewer Americans are getting married today than ever in our nation’s history. But why? And is it really that big of a deal? Today, Keith sits down with Brad Wilcox, Professor of Sociology and author of “Get Married,” to learn why society should care about preserving our country’s most fundamental institution. Brad shares some of the reasons that people are being influenced to stay single or to wait until later in life to marry. He introduces the “Masters of Marriage,” or the four groups who are getting married and staying married the longest. He uses research to prove why married couples are happier than their counterparts and how marriage positively affects men in particular. Plus, what about dating apps? Shouldn’t these help increase the marriage rate? Is the idea of finding a soulmate all a myth? Do couples who cohabitate enjoy the same benefits as married couples? If you think you’re ready to listen, say “I do!”

How Should Christians Vote? The Bible Tells Me So! with Tremper Longman

How Should Christians Vote? The Bible Tells Me So! with Tremper Longman

The 2024 election is fast approaching and many Christians are still left wondering whose policies best represent the Bible’s teachings. Today, we’re talking to theologian and author of “The Bible and the Ballot,” Tremper Longman, to learn how Christians can vote in a way that best reflects biblical values. First, Tremper tells us why he decided to write a book on politics in the first place. How much does he believe that Christians should participate in the political process? And how much should the Church participate? Does the Bible have something to contribute to contentious political issues like abortion, immigration, and race? What are loving, biblical responses to these topics? And should Christians push for laws around such issues? Plus, how much should Christians consider a political candidate’s character over their policies? And learn why he says that Christians don’t actually “need” religious liberty. Listen now!

Why Do Millennials Dread Motherhood? with Rachel Cohen

Thankless. Exhausting. Lonely. That’s how many Millennial women view the prospect of motherhood. And the statistics bear this out: The global fertility rate is steadily dropping. So, how did we get here? Today, Keith is joined by Vox senior reporter, Rachel Cohen, to discuss. Hear Rachel share insights from her recent article, “How Millennials Learned to Dread Motherhood,” where she explained why her generation got to this point and presented an unbiased, optimistic case for motherhood instead. Today she shares more on why she thinks there’s been such a sharp decline in children being born, how TikTok and social media influencers have contributed to this issue, and how politics may play a role. She walks through “The List” of the top reasons women cite for not having kids. Plus, what does she make of the fact that studies show that women with children report higher levels of happiness than women without? And what types of responses has she received after publishing her essay? Listen now!

How To Talk Politics Without Fighting with Monica Guzman

How To Talk Politics Without Fighting with Monica Guzman

How does a liberal living in one of the deepest blue counties in the country converse with her conservative, Mexican immigrant parents who voted for Donald Trump twice? We find out today when Monica Guzman joins us on the pod! Monica is on the national leadership team of Braver Angels, a “depolarization organization” designed to reduce partisan animosity, and the author of “I Never Thought of it That Way.” Hear her share her family’s story and why she’s so passionate about people learning to have difficult conversations, even in today’s dangerously divided times. But given that it’s extremely rare for people to change their minds, particularly on political issues, what should the goal of such conversations be, and how can we know if we’ve succeeded? Has our culture lost the idea of absolute truth and can we persuade anyone anymore? Plus, she shares some practical tips for having difficult conversations with people whose worldview is different from (or even opposed to) your own. Listen now!
