One of the most common questions you might get is: "How long have you lived here?"

I get this question all the time. 

But a better version is: "How well do you know the area?"

This will almost always get a more interesting answer. And it lets them choose what to talk about. Like: how long they've lived here, where they came from, or what they know best in area.

So your takeaway tip of the day is: instead of asking "How long have you lived here?" or "Where are you from", instead ask "How well do you know the area?"
