Marketing vs. Advertising / What they are, how they're similar & different

Hey, what is going on everyone? Klyde here with 3 Ways Marketing. Today we're going to talk about Marketing vs Advertising. We're going to talk about what they are, how they differ, and how they're similar.

    So let's get going.

Marketing is a whole plan. You start with a problem, then you come up with a strategy, you start planning, you look at the tactics, you look at the implementation, measure it, you refine it, then you repeat.

Advertising on the other hand is just tactics. Usually, more often than none, it does not include anything else. And sometimes, because you can't. For example, you cannot measure radio ads, you cannot measure coupon mailers, and so on and so forth.

So advertising is part of marketing. While marketing is a whole pizza pie, advertising is just a slice of that pie.

So let's take an example. We have a restaurant in Canton Michigan, that's one of our clients. The first thing we did was we looked at the problem. It was a new restaurant, inside a liquor store. And we had to figure out ways to get the word out there, and ultimately get more customers. Because that's the goal of every restaurant, the goal and the problem. Because all restaurants have the same problem. They either 1. Need more customers, or 2. More repeat business, so their current customers to come back more often.

So with the restaurant in Canton, what we did was we strategized. So we said we're going to develop a VIP Program to build a database. Then we started coming up with a plan. So we got the strategy, now let's plan it out. We decided to offer a BOGO Chicken Sandwich in order to people to give us their information, such as names, emails, phone numbers and so on, so we can build a database.

Then we looked at the tactics, or advertising channels. So how are we gonna do that? We're going to use Facebook Ads, website, social media posts, online ordering and some other advertising channels. Then the next thing, we started implementing things. Then we started measuring. So what we do, as 3 Ways Marketing company, every week we measure how each Facebook Ad is doing, how our organic posts are doing, how our online ordering is doing, how our website traffic is doing, and so on and so forth.

Next step is refining it. We change what isn't working, and we focus our energy and time on what's working. Good thing about digital marketing is you can see what's working or what's not. Albeit, you have to use tactics, but for the most part, you can see. Because even if you do your own Facebook Ads, you can see how many people it's reaching, and how many engagements it's getting. So to a certain extent, digital marketing can be measured.

And last but not least, we repeat everything! Obviously you don't repeat every single step, because the problem, for example, is the same for every restaurant. But the strategy could sometimes change, which will change the plan and the tactics. But repeating it is just measuring it, and refining it. That's all it is.

Alright, so with this article and video, we hope you get a good understanding of what marketing is, and what advertising is, and how it applies to the restaurant industry.
