On 29 October 2007, the 25th anniversary of his death, UCL Engineering celebrated the contribution to automotive engineering of former UCL student Colin Chapman.

Chapman founded Lotus in the 1950s and was for years a driving force behind Formula One. His designs and technical innovations formed the basis for some of the most successful racing and sports cars ever made and a range of Lotus cars are today on display in the main UCL quad.

Alongside the array of motor vehicles is an exhibition of original Lotus designs and photographs, which was on display in the cloisters. Held in partnership with Group Lotus, the event also recognised the research connections between UCL and Lotus Engineering. Among the guests were distinguished figures from the world of motor racing, including Damon Hill, Sir Stirling Moss and Patrick Head.
