Sex, Marriage, and Singleness: 1 Corinthians 7 - Episode 3

Sex, Marriage, and Singleness: 1 Corinthians 7 - Episode 3

The longest passage in the entire Bible that addresses relationships between women and men can be found in 1 Corinthians 7. Here, Paul moves methodically back and forth between men and women, wives and husbands painstakingly demonstrating God’s plan for mutuality in our relationships.
You might need your Bible for this one. Watch how clearly Paul lays out God’s instructions on how to think about and relate to one another; no hierarchy and not a hint of male or husband authority or leadership in relationships. It’s shocking how clear how he lays the foundation for how we are to think. God’s way was countercultural and beautiful- it tore down all barriers!

    Paul and Women: Co-Workers - Episode 6

    Paul and Women: Co-Workers - Episode 6

This episode is about Paul and the women who did ministry with him.

He commended some women for their hard work, for the courage to risk their lives, and another who had even been in prison with him. Some women he had worked along side “contending for the cause of the gospel” and they gave him “great joy because of their partnership [with him] in the gospel”. Others he depended on in ministry and entrusted with extremely important ministry tasks.

We take a look at Priscilla, Lydia, Junia, Syntche and Euodia, and of course - Phoebe!

The two words that Paul uses to describe Pheobe teach us a lot. Paul encourages many people in Romans 16 and one third of them are women. Undoubtably, there were many more men in leadership than women at that time in history but it is truly impressive for there to be as many women named as there are.

This paints quite a picture of Paul’s attitude about women using their talents to lead and what is possible in God’s church.

What about submission? - Episode 5

What about submission? - Episode 5

Submission is the Christian way of relating. And mutual submission is vital to our relationships.

Many have thought these household codes were God’s unique plan for organizing families as Christians. In this episode we reexamine where this is addressed in the scriptures. Household codes were a commonly used concept to advise men that were legally in charge (patriarchs) how to rule their wives, children and slaves. Paul used a form of this method to draw attention to how radically different Jesus‘s way was from the world’s way.

Paul is teaches all the people in the Ephesian church how to submit in their interpersonal relationships and does not reinforce social structures of the times.

    What About 1 Timothy 2:11-12? - Episode 4

    What About 1 Timothy 2:11-12? - Episode 4

    Let women learn??

"This verse often functions as a “conversation stopper”. Typically, what happens in a discussion is that the person who holds the hierarchical or complementarian view says something like, “Say what you want, but 1 Timothy 2:12 makes it clear that women cannot be in authority over men…”

Did Paul really intend to drop a bomb that would forever exclude women from all levels of church leadership?"

In this episode, we take a look at Jesus's interactions with women. Jesus came to show us who God is, so it is important to examine how Jesus walked with the women in and outside of his ministry. What were his reactions? What did he think and value? How might his interactions deviate from the standard cultural practices during his lifetime?

    Genesis - Episode 1

By studying Genesis, we see that God’s original plan for women and men was mutuality. Gender equality and partnership not hierarchy is what God desires in the world and in his church. As disciples, we must understand and live out God’s original intention for his creation.
