That Irish Feminist Podcast | Episode 6: Why Princess Latifa's Capture is an Inherently Irish Story

That Irish Feminist Podcast | Episode 6: Why Princess Latifa's Capture is an Inherently Irish Story

You may have seen Princess Latifa in the news again this week. This is a story I’ve covered as a journalist (#linkinbio) and it’s one I’m just personally really fascinated by, not least because I think there’s a really inherently Irish story at the core of what’s happened to Princess Latifa.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Last episode I spoke about the Magdalene Laundries and how the island of Ireland has controlled women through shame and the state, and Princess Latifa is going through such a similar experience to this, albeit in a much more Hollywood way; involving jet skis, yachts and international kidnapping attempts. Additionally, Mary Robinson, the former Irish President and UN Commissioner for Human Rights (no, seriously) faced backlash after she visited Princess Latifa after she was captured and weaponised her mental health against her, which is an all to familiar experience for women in Ireland.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s an episode that I’m really excited about sharing as I’ve written this piece and had it picked up on by a paper only to have it dropped (I presume ONCE AGAIN for legal reasons) so it’s nice to be able to put it into action on here.

That Irish Feminist Podcast | Episode 5: Not just a Handmaid's Tale: How Ireland's Magdalene Laundries created a world beyond dystopia.

That Irish Feminist Podcast | Episode 5: Not just a Handmaid's Tale: How Ireland's Magdalene Laundries created a world beyond dystopia.

As you will know by now, if there is one thing I want to achieve from working on this podcast, it is raising awareness of the myriad ways in which women have been impacted by state violence in Ireland.

Something that’s always got me riled up is the silence and lack of information we’re given, especially in the North, surrounding the Magdalene Laundries and the Mother and Baby Homes.

The Handmaids Tale is a great piece of writing, but if you’ve read the book and are a fan of Magaret Atwood’s work, you’ll know that it’s far from fiction and in fact, the experiences of the characters in the book were are in many ways tame version of the reality faced by many women across Ireland at the hands of the state.

This episode is  heavy but I hope you find it informative.

As always, when we say women it's as a trans inclusive term! 🏳️‍⚧️💕

That Irish Feminist Podcast | Episode 4: Transgenerational Trauma in Ireland and what the Irish owe Indigenous American's

That Irish Feminist Podcast | Episode 4: Transgenerational Trauma in Ireland and what the Irish owe Indigenous American's

Episode 5 is a super short episode, I see this weeks episode as more of a news bulletin than a deep dive. Next week, fingers crossed, I’ll be expanding on the themes of this episodes, surrounding transgenerational trauma, when speaking with Louise from @Resiliencebylouise.

In the meantime, please give this episode a listen as not only do we have a lot to learn about Irish trauma, but also the ways in which Irish trauma intersects with other traumatised groups, and in particular what we in Ireland owe the Indigenous People of America.

I hope you find this episode interesting and useful and please feel free to comment or drop me a message with any feedback.

That Irish Feminist Podcast | Episode 3: The (gas) Light of My Life! What rom-coms can teach us about narcissistic abuse.

That Irish Feminist Podcast | Episode 3: The (gas) Light of My Life! What rom-coms can teach us about narcissistic abuse.

In this episode I give a very brief overview of narcissism and narcissistic abuse, what it is, how to spot it and what to you if you think you may be in a narcissistic relationship. I have no medical training on personality disorders, just two years of studying narcissism and transgenerational trauma, and the impact that these two, often intersecting experiences can have.

I hope you find the episode useful, educational or at the very least, interesting. Below are some of the best resources I've found for further information on narcissism and the cycle of abuse, as well as how to access recovery support.

That Irish Feminist Podcast | Episode 2: Endometri-OH-SH*T! Paula Bond AKA @Endolifeasweknowit on what endometriosis is and why you should care about it

In this episode I'm speaking to Paula Bond AKA @Endolifeasweknowit who campaigns for better treatment and diagnosis for people who suffer with Endometriosis. At multiple time throughout this podcast we switch between saying women and people to honour the fact that women is a term inclusive of trans people and that trans men and non-binary people can also suffer from this debilitating disease.
