Nothing says summer like a road trip movie, so we're setting off for California in this 1986 cult thriller. Things get interesting in West Texas when a young man picks up a mysterious hitchhiker who turns out to be an insane serial killer. Starring Rutger Hauer, C. Thomas Howell, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, this flick has more twists than a mountain road, but it lacked one thing when it premiered: an audience. Yes, it grossed even less than its $7.9 million dollar budget, but yet somehow it earned a sequel in 2003 and a remake in 2007. While both Siskel and Ebert gave this ride a “thumbs down,” director Christopher Nolan has called it one of his guilty pleasures. But is this movie more road war or road bore? We're sticking out our thumbs in hopes of catching a lift with The Hitcher!

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the first Godzilla film, Japanese movie studio Toho unleashed a new installment in its historic franchise last year. Set in Japan in the days following World War II, the film serves a prequel of sorts to the 1954 film, introducing a smaller - yet still destructive - version of the kaiju. Led by a dishonored kamikaze pilot, a group of Japanese veterans and ordinary citizens must stand up to Godzilla when the government fails to act. Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film bit off $115 million at the global box office, snagged an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and received near-universal acclaim. It’s the final countdown to Godzilla Minus One!

We’re rewinding the clock to 2020 with a release of our review (repeating from Legends 246) of Mad Max: Fury Road, the sequel to the recently released Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga film. Believe it or not, we were just starting to hear rumblings of a long-promised Furiosa prequel in development four years ago. From the studio that brought us Venom and Morbius comes the latest attempt by Sony to make a Spider-Man movie without Spider-Man in it! When Cassandra Webb’s mother is bitten by a magic spider, she grows up with the power to see the future. But even she couldn’t predict that this movie would be crowned the worst of the year. Starring Dakota Johnson, with Sydney Sweeney, Isabella Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim, and Adam Scott, the S. J. Clarkson film wove a string of bad reviews into a spindly $100 million at the box office. One reviewer called it “the death of the superhero genre, the burning of the superhero genre to the ground and then the returning in the middle of the night to piss on the superhero genre’s ashes.” Gee, I wonder how he really felt! But since hitting Netflix, it's been the Number One movie, so how bad can it be? Join us as we get caught up with Madame Web!

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On burst onto the internet stage in 2010 with a three minute YouTube video. In three short videos, the world fell in love with the tiny, soft-spoken, introspective mollusc as he showed us his everyday life in a human-sized home. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and voiced by actress Jenny Slate, Marcel’s adventures jumped to the big screen in 2021 with a feature length film. While audiences didn't exactly “shell”out the big bucks to see it, the movie was critically adored, earning a near-perfect 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Now we're renting an AirBnB to see what all the fuss is about!

Putting a new spin on the traditional coming-of-age teen movie, director Emma Seligman mashes up The Breakfast Club with Fight Club for an action-packed, surreal romp through high school. Starring Rachel Sennot and Ayo Edebiri as two lesbians who start a “self-defense” club to get girls, this 2023 film explores the life of the “untalented gays” at Rockbridge Falls High School as they deal with football players, crushes, and the murderous Huntington Golden Ferrets. The film didn't exactly kick butt at the box office, but it was a critical success, with one reviewer calling it the “horniest, bloodiest high school movie of the 21st century.” Now we're taking it from the top with Bottoms!
