Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820 and National Nurses Week coincides with her birthday. She was called The Lady with the Lamp because she often rounded at night, and her dedication to patient care has continued for over 200 years.This Saturday, in honor of National Nurses Week, The Word on Medicine will air our program “All About Nurses." We are filling the radio station’s recording studio with APNPs, RNs and OR nurses: Ashley Jurceka-Kolansinski (RN, 12 CFAC), Bethany Haefke (RN, BSN, PACU), Cara Kinderman (RN, BSN, level 4 PACU), Gabriella Pyptiuk (MSN, APNP), Gina Nickel (RN, MEDSURG-BC 12 CFAC), Hannah White (RN, 12 CFAC), Jessica Lunn (RN, Charge Nurse 12 CFAC), Justin Dworak (CRNA, APNP), Lisa Johnson (CRNA, APNP), Mary Elizabeth Holden (PA), Matthew Reuter (DNP, APNP), and Tiffany Early (RN, 12 CFAC). We discuss the powerful impact of nurses on all of us. Medical experts and patients discuss the symptoms and management of pelvic organ prolapse, a condition that significantly impacts a woman’s quality of life, and has several medical and surgical treatment options. Please join our panels of experts Dr. Emily Davison, Geralyn Schuster (RN, WISH nurse) and two grateful patients who are willing to share their stories.

We have an amazing program for you this Saturday as The Word on Medicine explores Hearing Loss in Children. Our experts include Dr. Karl Doerfer, assistant professor of otolaryngology at MCW and Dr. Sarah Klajbor, a pediatric cochlear implant audiologist - they are true experts in cochlear implants, an operation which will be explained in detail along with the many causes for childhood hearing loss. Most important, The Word on Medicine will bring you the perspective of the patient: Drs. Doerfer and Klajbor will be joined by 17-year-old Helena, who received a cochlear implant many years ago at Children’s Wisconsin, and her mom, Anna. Helena’s story of life with a cochlear implant, now 14-15 years after the operation, is a story you do not want to miss!

We are joined this Saturday by Dr. George MacKinnon, founding dean and professor of the MCW School of Pharmacy; Bridget Nelson, a soon-to-be pharmacist who is in her last year at the MCW School of Pharmacy; Dr. Ulrich Broeckel, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the School of Pharmacy; Dr. Carolyn Oxencis, a clinical pharmacist in Hematology/Oncology and an assistant professor in the MCW School of Pharmacy; and Dr. Matthew Stanton, an assistant professor in the School of Pharmacy and the Department of Emergency Medicine.
