I remember being asked once, 'is it more important to be better in business or different?'

The answer undoubtedly is... to be different. 
Why? Being better at something doesn't make you stand out. It doesn't create a point of conversation. It doesn't give Clients a reason to choose your business over another.
Being better after all, is subjective, and what's better for one person, may not be for another. 
Being different though, gives you a real competitive advantage because you can offer someone something that they cannot get anywhere else.
