Telenovelas: A History Lesson w/ Dr. Melixa Abad-Izquierdo & Sergio Gonzalez

Telenovelas: A History Lesson w/ Dr. Melixa Abad-Izquierdo & Sergio Gonzalez

Amigues! Guess what! Today we are talking all about the media that raised us: TELENOVELAS! We’re talking to two special guests. Dr. Melixa Abad-Izquierdo takes us through the history of the Teleteatro (which we could call a predecessor to Novelas) and draws a direct line from Mexican media of the late 50s to the classics we know and love!

We’re also joined by Sergio Gonzalez (future Doctora) for a fun conversation on our favorite novelas, protagonists and villanas! What a rabbit hole of nostalgia this was!

    Hope you enjoy!

Our Stories, Our Faces w/ Karla Marina Hernandez

Our Stories, Our Faces w/ Karla Marina Hernandez

Amigues! On this second installment of our Latine Heritage Month program, we caught up with Karla Hernandez, a researcher at the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. To our surprise, she's also from South Central (so you know the chisme was good!). We discuss the current state of Latinx representation in Hollywood and Spoiler Alert: There aren't enough of us!

We do apologize - Amigues, I'm currently in NYC for work (you know - being an Urban Planner) and I had to record this episode in a closet (the irony). That being said, the audio is not the greatest but the conversation was juicy so bear with us!

What Is Our Language? w/ Spanish Sin Pena

What Is Our Language? w/ Spanish Sin Pena

Amigues! Welcome back to another episode of Fruta Fresca, and more importantly Bienvenides to our Latine Heritage Month celebration! For the next couple of episodes we will be exploring topics centering the experience of Latine peoples across the diaspora. This week we are joined by Wendy Ramirez and Jackie Rodriguez of Spanish Sin Pena and we dive deep into a conversation around Language, Culture, and Identity. This episode is dedicated to all of the folks that navigate between not feeling Latine enough due to their lack of Spanish and folks who not only speak Spanish but also dream in Spanish. To paraphrase our tia, Anzaldua: We strive to arrive at a place where our spanish doesn't have to be translated and our english doesn't have to be justified.
