This week on the pod, we are covering Julia Hannafin's debut novel, Cascade. Julia weaves the most poetic sentences and paragraphs into a masterpiece covering all aspects of grief, gender, and the human experience.

Haylie and Lauren sigh and laugh and dissect this beautiful novel about a young woman who goes to the Farallon Islands on a scientific expedition to track white sharks and meanwhile discovers herself through dealing with her own grief and understanding of her own true, wild nature. In this episode, we walk through, character by character, this beautifully written book about five best friends overcoming the odds and finding joy amidst life’s challenges in a slum of Bangalore. The resilience and joy shines through with author's poetic writing style and the stories of the many women spotlight diversity, hardship, and love.

One small caveat--around the 7 minute mark, we do talk a bit about how sons are valued more than daughters in this specific context, and while this may be culturally relevant, it is also a stereotypical representation in this book and something that communities in India are working hard to combat.
