Episode 4 - Dr. Matthew Kim

On episode 4 of “SermonCraft”, I speak with Dr. Matthew Kim as we discuss the topic of exegeting the audience as it relates to sermon prep. Dr. Matthew Kim (PhD, University of Edinburgh) is professor of practical theology and holder of the Hubert H. and Gladys S. Raborn Chair of Pastoral Leadership at Truett Theological Seminary, Baylor University. He is a scholar-practitioner and expert in homiletics. He is the award-winning author of Preaching to People in Pain and Preaching with Cultural Intelligence. Episode 3: Dr. Dan Boone

On episode 3 of “SermonCraft”, I’ll chat with Dr. Dan Boone as we discuss the component of the image page in relation to writing and building a sermon. Dr. Dan Boone serves as president of Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN and is a professor of Pastoral Theology and Preaching. He earned a Master of Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary and a Doctorate of Ministry at McCormick Theological Seminary. Initially feeling the call to ministry at the young age of 12, he has decades of experience in leading congregations of all sizes and diversities. After several years of leading churches across the southeast, he spent 20 years as a pastor to college campus churches in Nashville, TN and Bourbonnais, IL near Chicago. Episode 2: Dr. Anna Carter Florence

On episode 2 of “SermonCraft”, I’ll chat with Dr. Rev. Anna Carter Florence as we discuss the topic of attending to the text. Dr. Rev. Florence is the Peter Marshall Professor of Preaching at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and holds degrees from Yale University and Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div. and Ph.D.). Before joining the Columbia faculty in 1998, Dr. Florence served as an associate pastor for youth and young adults at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis. Her books include Preaching as Testimony, Inscribing the Word, and Rehearsing Scripture: Discovering God’s Word in Community, based on her 2012 Lyman Beecher Lectures on Preaching at Yale Divinity School. Her newest book is ‘A’ is for Alabaster: A Preacher’s Alphabet. She has also published numerous articles and chapters in books and journals, including a year’s worth of lectionary text commentaries for WorkingPreacher.org. Dr. Florence’s research focuses on testimony, preaching pedagogies, and creative strategies for communities to engage and encounter the biblical text. She is a frequent teacher and lecturer in the U.S. and abroad.
