This A- Z animal podcast series brings us to one of the most unusual and most misunderstood creatures that we have studied so far. The sloth…. The sloth was originally named after one of the seven deadly sins, and has been labeled as the world's laziest animal for decades. More recently, though, we have learned that they are far from being simple, lazy creatures that sleep all day, but rather they are complex, mysterious animals with an interesting history. Overall sloths symbolize relaxation, conservation, mindfulness, groundedness, and patience. It gathers wisdom and values hanging upside down in the trees, rotating its head as far as an owl does. With grace and patience, the sloth blends into nature, and is content to move at their own pace, enjoying the present moment. All tree sloths that we see today evolved from the extinct great ground slough of 64 million years ago. This ancient sloth was some of the only mammals that had digestive systems large enough to process avocado seeds… They feast on the fruit and disperse the seeds. So if it wasn't for them, there might not be any avocados at all.

Spirit Animals are basically any animal to whom you feel a deep connection to, and from whom you can learn. In exploring the spiritual meaning, symbolism, mythology and history of animals A through Z. In this podcast series, perhaps you have made some powerful connections like that, maybe even acquired spiritual animal totems. Today's creatures' presence can liven up any situation with their ability to spray foul smelling liquid when they feel threatened. Yes, I am talking about the black and white skunk, who is found in North, South and in Central America. They are usually located near humans because they enjoy eating human garbage. Despite many humans finding them to be distasteful because of their smell. They actually play an important role in our ecosystem. They help control populations of rodents and other small animals that can damage crops and spread disease. It is interesting to note that skunk's strong sense of smell can be used by humans to detect bombs and other explosives. Overall skunk symbolizes balance, awareness, protection, boundaries, courageousness, energy conservation, peace, fertility and self-confidence.

In continuation of the animal A through Z podcast series, today's episode is about the seal. The seal is sometimes considered the class clown of the marine animals, symbolizing humor, ease of movement, good fortune, playfulness, joy, intuition, inner guidance, adaptations, resilience, and connection to the spirit round. These fascinating creatures are found in oceans throughout the world, including places as cold as the Arctic and Antarctica. The Seal’s streamline bodies allow them to move swiftly and effortlessly through the water. There are webbed flippers enable them to navigate with precision and agility. The dense oily fur keeps them warm and dry by repelling water and providing insulation. They also have the ability to hold their breath for very long periods of time, allowing them to withstand extreme conditions of deep sea diving with their endurance. Seals play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem. As what we call a keystone species, they maintain a balance of marine food webs by controlling populations of their prey species of fish and squid. Seals have appeared in various myths and folklore. In Celtic tradition, they were believed to be selkies… mythical beings who could transform from seals to humans. In some Native American traditions, seals are considered powerful spirit guides, symbolizing protection, transition, and guidance during journeys. In Western children's literature, they are often portrayed as representing innocence, friendship, and whimsical adventure.  
So call in seal medicine into your life for joy and balance, strength, perseverance, and the ability to go with the flow. Call in the seal! “Call IT in With Dar!”

When I see animals, in person, in pictures or in videos, I love to then later research their history, characteristics and symbolism. Today's creature, the scorpion is no exception. Overall, the scorpion symbolizes death, survival, adaptation, motherhood, Third Eye intuitiveness, transformation, psychic gifts and rebirth. The ancient Egyptians respected the scorpion spirit, and saw it as a powerful guardian of souls moving from one world to the next. The Goddess Selket was accompanied by the scorpion and was ruler of healing stings and bites. It was also a very common ritual by priests during mummification to safeguard the precious spirit within using the scorpion medicine. The Scorpion was believed to grant the power of change through various transformations and reincarnation. African stories also tie the scorpion to transformation, life and death. They believed the scorpion had the power to heal. Shamans use their sting, like a mind-altering drug to take them to the spirit world and to dream time to make prophecies. In many cultures, the Scorpion has come to represent unexpected death as well. In approaching a victim the scorpion does an almost playful looking dance, reminding us to live every moment as if it is our last…living to the fullest was Scorpion medicine. 
So call on the Scorpion medicine, when you need to sort things out for survival, protection, understanding death, living life to the fullest. For psychic gifts, intuition, motherhood, adaptation and survival. Call on Scorpion medicine. Call IT in With Dar!

I certainly enjoy animal symbolism, mythology and folklore, in hopes that you do too, which is my reason for continuing this animal series of podcasts. I'd like to share with you that a few weeks ago, I visited a zoo here in Texas, and I was struck by how ancient the white rhinoceros seemed. It looks so prehistoric in its appearance. The rhinoceros is a large, powerful, fascinating creature, known for its thick skin, strong horn, resilience and unwavering determination. It has been a powerful source of fascination for many civilizations throughout history, often representing strength, protection, and stability. Its symbolism can be found in various mythologies and folklore. In Africa, it holds great significance as a symbol of strength and protection. It is admired for its ability to defend itself with its thick skin and powerful horn. In many tribes, it represents courage and determination. For instance, in East Africa, the rhinoceros is considered a guardian spirit that protects their communities from harm. The Shona tribe in Zimbabwe sees it as a symbol of fertility, due to its ability to reproduce and reproduce quickly, despite harsh weather conditions. In some African cultures, it is associated with the rising sun because of its horns' appearance looking like a sun rising. In Chinese culture, the rhinoceros is a symbol of power and stability. It represents wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. It is often depicted alongside dragons and other mythical creatures. 

Overall, the rhinoceros embodies attributes of power, solidarity, and resilience. It is admired for its size, strength, and unyielding energy. Its remarkable horn has long been a symbol of protection and defense, reminding us to be resilient in the face of our own challenges. So, call on the rhinoceros…Call on the rhinoceros medicine for the true essence of power. “Call IT in With Dar!”

I love exploring the different animals, their symbolism, their cultural backgrounds, and their unique characteristics. And today's episode is no exception.
