A problem we often see in old and new gardens is anaerobic soils. This happens when the soil becomes hard and compact, the soil profile is lost and it lacks oxygen throughout the soil structure (or lack of). 



When this happens the soil becomes anaerobic and the balance of good and bad bacteria is compromised. The bad bacteria take over and growing anything from grass to plants becomes difficult or non-existent.



To fix this we need to rebuild the soil profile horizons with a mix of organic matter such as humus and compost and then reintroduce the good bacteria because it's the good mix of bacteria in the soils that exchange sugars with the plants that encourage healthy, strong and fast-growing plants.



This process does take a little time depending on the condition of the ground but it is a wonderful process to watch as you transform poor unhealthy soils into organically rich soil teeming with life!
