Grace Abounds St. John's Lutheran Church

What does it mean to “Keep the Sabbath” as a day of rest from work (Deut 4)? Is it a rule? Is it a burden? Is it an invitation? When local religious authorities accuse Jesus and his disciples of breaking the law by ‘doing the work’ of eating and healing on the Sabbath, Jesus responds by showing them what the Sabbath is really all about (Mark 2 & 3).

It can be tough to talk about the Holy Spirit: the Wind who moved over the waters of creation (Genesis 1; Psalm 104); the Pentecost fire who inspired the disciples to share the good news of Jesus (Acts 2); the Advocate who intercedes for us with “sighs too deep for words” (John 15; Romans 8). Perhaps that’s because the Holy Spirit isn’t only Someone we talk about, the Holy Spirit is Someone we know. Who is the Holy Spirit for you?

When God was made incarnate and walked this earth in the form of Jesus Christ, it was in part to bear witness to the pain of this world. The disciples were the first witness to the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. They may have been the first to witness to this radical truth but they would not be the last. We are also witnesses to this remarkable story and are called to proclaim its truth.

“It really is all about love, isn’t it.” A beloved member of our church said this to his wife in the middle of one of my sermons years ago. He’s right. Love is the greatest commandment. Love is the fruit of the Spirit. Love is what Jesus embodied in his teaching and example. And love is how people will know we are his followers.

The story of the Ethiopian Eunuch’s baptism shows us the incredible power of the Spirit. This is God’s Spirit that has acted in the lives of so many, including our own.
