    Nick Hansen - June 9th, 2024 - The Only Begotten God

    Main Scripture
    Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
    Joh 1:15 John testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, `He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'"
    Joh 1:16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.
    Joh 1:17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
    Joh 1:18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

    Observations
    The word “Father” occurs twice in this chapter, v14 and v18. The word “Son” occurs for the first time in verse 18.
    The word translated “only begotten” occurs 9 times in the entire Bible, and four of those in the gospel of John, two are in these verses.
    The phrase “grace and truth” occurs twice in these verses and nowhere else in the Bible.
    The Apostle John is carefully weaving the introduction of John the Baptist into this prologue. In v6-8, and then this verse.
    John 1:15 is echoed once more in verse 30.
    The name of Jesus is mentioned for the first time (this gospel) in v17.

    Perfect Relationship
    The Father and Son are equal in glory. Grace, goodness, holiness, and truth.
    The Father and Son are in perfect relationship.
    The Father and Son are united in their will.

    Related Scripture
    Col 1:19  For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
    Col 1:20  and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

    1 Timothy 6:16:
    "Who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen."

    Rom 3:19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God;
    Rom 3:20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
    Rom 3:21 But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
    Rom 3:22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction;
    Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
    Rom 3:24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
    Rom 3:25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
    Rom 3:26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

    Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son;
    Heb 11:18 it was he to whom it was said, "IN ISAAC YOUR DESCENDANTS SHALL BE CALLED."
    Heb 11:19 He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type.

    What was it, blessed God
    What was it, blessed God,
    Led Thee to give Thy Son,
    To yield Thy well-beloved
    For us by sin undone?
    ’Twas love unbounded led Thee thus
    To give Thy well-beloved for us. To give Thy well-beloved for us.

    He reminded them that - As a result of their obedience to God, they have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ and it is by his great Mercy that they have been born again because God raised Jesus Christ from dead. – v 1-3

    Believers as “temporary residents” – what does this mean?
    This mean we are not home yet. i.e., this world is not our home. This mean we are in this world for a moment .i.e. we are time bound
    This mean we must prioritize our time here on earth
    This mean we cannot conform to the pattern of this world

    WISDOM
    1 Corinthians 1 v 24-25
    Moment of reflection
    As a “Believers”, maybe it’s time to look inwardly.
    How do YOU view yourself? Do YOU truly view yourself as a “temporary resident” on earth, looking ahead to eternal moment with God? Or are YOU busy “setting up camp” here in this world by pursuing things that won’t last?
    As “Believers” it is time we sit down and shine light on various aspects of our lives – Home, Work/Career, Relationships, Habits etc. and PRAY to God to reveal to us where we are running after the world instead of him.
