Longer laying cycles for birds has been a widely discussed topic in recent years, with some producers successfully achieving 90–100-week lays. But this move hasn’t come without its challenges, particularly in making sure neither egg quality nor bird health is compromised. In this episode, we speak to Richard Jackson, from St David’s Poultry team, to hear his advice on how an extended lay can be achieved successfully.

Red mite is an issue most layer producers will experience at some point, and is often a problem that keeps re-occurring if not managed effectively. Normally, it’s not until the weather really starts to warm up that problems are experienced. But last November producers faced another housing order to help control the spread of avian influenza, which has meant red mite has become an issue much earlier in the season than expected and is something producers need to be mindful of.
