Campaigns intensify in Rwanda ahead of July 15 poll - June 21, 2024
Rwandans will head to the polls on 15 July for presidential and parliamentary elections. They will choose between three presidential candidates, including current President Paul Kagame. Kagame has governed Rwanda for decades, securing presidential victories in the elections of 2003, 2010, and 2017. Each time, he got over 90 percent of the vote. VOA’s Douglas Mpuga reached Gongaza Muganwa, a journalist and political analyst, to find out how the campaigns are progressing.

Protests continue in Kenya over tax increases - June 21, 2024
After months of expressing anger on social media, thousands of Kenyans gathered in Nairobi and elsewhere this week to protest a bill that would increase taxes to pay for loans and development. Demonstrations that began Tuesday continued into a third day, even as the government scaled back part of the proposed tax increases. The protest Thursday went on for hours and police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse demonstrators who occupied streets in central Nairobi. Mohammed Yusuf reports.

Malawi’s President Chakwere names new vice president - June 21, 2024
Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has named Dr. Michael Biswick Usi as the country’s new vice president. He replaces the late Vice President Chilima who died in a plane crash on June 10 along with eight other Malawian officials. According to Malawi’s constitution the president must appoint his second-in-command within seven days from the date of a vacancy.
