Host Sarah Burke welcomes Bronwin Parks & Elinor Svoboda to discuss their new podcast 'Late in 88' launching soon on the Women in Media Network! They share the story of how they reconnected for this project after spending 13 years in school together, but not really as friends. They discuss the importance of representation and inclusion in media and the arts while discussing the challenges and progress of the queer community, the history of Pride, and the impact of legislation and societal acceptance. They touch on the importance of queer history, the healing journey of self-acceptance, and the significance of sharing authentic stories and experiences within the LGBTQ+ community.
Late in ‘88 is a podcast that explores the blurred lines of truth and memory as two grade school classmates share their experiences of growing up queer and gender non-conforming in Calgary, Alberta 1988, at a time when there wasn't language to describe identities that were fringe and undefinable. By shining a light on their middle childhood, Bronwin and Elinor explore the impact of historical context and the gift of contemporary language that allows more freedom of self expression. The series will welcome many special guests and experts including gradeschool classmates, professors, doctors, and experts in their fields.
Bronwin Parks is a Calgary city kid who grew up to be a rancher, rodeo cowboi, and the founder of the award-winning Feisty Creative, a top-notch creative agency for the music, film, television, and digital media industries. Through Feisty, Bronwin has worked with brands, award shows, and all of Canada’s major music labels. 
Since coming out as queer in 1996 at the age of 16 and later in 2020 as non-binary, Bronwin has fought hard to be a much-needed and outspoken champion for diversity and equity. Their dedication in fighting for systemic change has led them to serve on several music and creative industry boards, pushing DEI initiatives, creating inclusive spaces, and bringing more opportunities for 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
Elinor Svoboda is an award-winning filmmaker, sound designer, educator, with over 20 years of experience. Her work has been nominated for both Grammy and Juno Awards, shortlisted for the Berlin Film Festival, and premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival. Notably, her 2012 short Documentary Tegan and Sara: INDIA was broadcast and distributed internationally via Warner Brothers Music. 
Alongside her directorial and sound work, Elinor works as a dedicated educator, having previously served as a sessional professor at Sheridan College and an instructor at York University. She has also been a faculty member of the Training in Power Academy of Meditation and Healing for the last 20 years.
Having spent several years in Toronto, Elinor recently returned to her home province of Alberta, where she is developing several television and feature narrative projects under her company, Ellefire Media.

She is also the longest running Cannon Doll in the National Ballet’s Nutcracker.
Susan shares her journey into the industry from having no interest in pursuing a career in media to finding her passion for storytelling. She also discusses the challenges she has faced as a woman in the industry and the importance of having a supportive community.
Susan shares some of her most rewarding moments, including her work with World Vision and her experiences in Africa. She also talks about the changes she has witnessed in the industry and speaks about the recognition and awards she has received throughout her career, including being appointed to the order of Ontario.

This week's guest is Ziya Tong, an award-winning author and broadcaster, best known for her work with Discovery’s flagship science show, Daily Planet, and NOVA ScienceNow on PBS. She is the author of the best-selling book The Reality Bubble, which was shortlisted for Canada’s most prestigious non-fiction literary prize, and won the Lane Anderson Award for best science writing. Ziya served as the Vice Chair of WWF Canada and currently serves as a trustee of WWF International.
Ziya co-directed a new documentary called Plastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics with Ben Addelman, and she stars alongside Executive Producer Rick Smith.
"We live in a time where some of our greatest threats are invisible. Like the climate crisis, microplastic pollution cannot be: it spans the globe, chokes up rivers and animals, and insidiously infiltrates the human body. As a science journalist and author, I have been reporting on the threat of plastic for almost two decades and believe that now more than ever, we need to reveal the connection between planetary health and human health, which is why I’ve put my own body on the line for the “Plastic People” project. As part of my journey, I will test my own home, my own food, and even my own feces for microplastics. We are very fortunate to also have a world-first for this project, as we meet surgeons and scientists who are probing the human brain to reveal whether microplastics can cross the blood-brain barrier. The results of testing here will be incredibly significant."
Ziya discusses her experience premiering the documentary at South by Southwest and the positive reception it received. She explains that the threat of microplastics is similar to the climate crisis in that it is invisible to the naked eye. She also shares some shocking findings from her research, including the presence of microplastics in the human body and the intentional spread of microplastics in the food chain. She also talks about her experience as a first-time filmmaker and the challenges she faced as a director.
Ziya also discusses the challenges of dealing with misinformation online, the experiences of women in the media industry, and the importance of supporting upcoming female journalists. Ziya mentions Sarika Suzuki and Severn Suzuki (David Suzuki's daughters) as women she admires in the media.

Host Sarah Burke chats with sports broadcaster Julie Stewart-Binks about her work with Bet Rivers, CBS Sports, Sportsnet New York and hosting the Olympics on CBC this summer back home in Toronto.
Julie discusses the joys of her career and the challenges she has faced in the sports media industry. She talks about her favorite roles in sports through the years, including her time as a rinkside reporter for the Anaheim Ducks with the support of a wonderful team. Julie shares where her love of sports began growing up and the discipline she learned from figure skating and track and field. She's also played on several hockey teams over the years!
Julie discusses her upcoming role hosting Paris Olympic coverage for CBC this summer and some of the differences she's noticed in Canadian vs. American broadcasting styles. She also briefly mentions her work with Bet Rivers and the prevalence of sports betting in both countries.
She highlights the unique atmosphere and appreciation in women's sports, particularly in the PWHL, and the importance of supporting other women in the sports media industry.

What an honour; this week's guest is iconic Canadian broadcaster Marilyn Denis who's just been announced as the recipient of the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards Lifetime Achievement Award.
During this conversation, Marilyn reflects on her career and the changes in the media industry. She discusses her transition from the television show and her new routine. She also talks about the pride she felt when she first started hosting CityLine and some industry challenges along the way. She expresses excitement about the next generation of broadcasters and their ability to be multifaceted and flexible. She emphasizes the importance of being present in the moment and navigating social media, especially being present for her granddaughter and family. She also reflects on embracing age and wisdom and reminds young women to have purpose and passion in their work.
In 2023, Marilyn announced she would bid adieu as host of the popular Canadian Screen Award-winning series THE MARILYN DENIS SHOW, following 13 incredible seasons and a 34-year career of daily daytime television.
Formerly co-host of Roger & Marilyn, the veteran radio broadcaster now hosts Marilyn Denis and Jamar, weekday mornings on Toronto’s #1-ranked radio station CHUM 104.5. A definite trailblazer, Edmonton-born Marilyn became the first female DJ at KRPL in Moscow, Idaho. She then moved to Calgary where she held various radio and television positions including programmer, music director, and traffic reporter. But it wasn’t until she auditioned to become Roger Ashby’s co-host, that Marilyn found her niche. After interviewing dozens of broadcasters and actresses, Marilyn breezed into CHUM FM in July 1986. After chatting with her for a few brief minutes, Roger immediately remarked, “I think we’ve found the right one.”
Marilyn has always balanced her dynamic radio career with her candid television presence. She first began her career in television by reporting on sports, weather, and entertainment at CFCN-TV (CTV Calgary) and working as a freelance reporter for TSN. Marilyn also shared hosting duties on Bravo!'s Gemini Award-winning concert series LIVE AT THE REHEARSAL HALL and was host of the popular daily show CITYLINE for nearly 20 years.
 A triple Gemini Award-winner (including back-to-back Viewers Choice Awards), Marilyn received The Rosalie Award, honouring Canadian women who have paved the way for others in radio broadcasting in 2006. Marilyn is the recipient of the Allan Waters Broadcast Lifetime Achievement Award, which was awarded at the 2017 Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards;_ _listed as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 by WXN_;_ _selected as the University of Idaho’s (where Marilyn studied broadcasting) 2017 Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree recipient.
