Episode 5 - Mark Sonnemann - Games and Game-based Learning

Episode 5 - Mark Sonnemann - Games and Game-based Learning

On today's episode I go on a deep dive into the world of games and game-based learning in classrooms with Mark Sonnemann. Mark is an elementary principal with the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board in Ontario. He and I have something in common, we're both lifelong fans of board gaming. I know, cool right? Honestly I learned so much from getting to talk to Mark about how he uses board games and game-based learning in his classrooms and schools, not the least of which was how I shouldn't be conflating gamification with games. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did!

Episode 4 - Brad Douglas - Humour in the Classroom

Episode 4 - Brad Douglas - Humour in the Classroom

Episode 4 of EdKnowledged is a real humdinger, and it has everything to do with our guest. Brad Douglas has been teaching at the junior level for a number of years with the ALCDSB. He's also a funny guy - it's doubtful you'd get through a full conversation with him without cracking up. I wanted to talk to him about how he uses a sense of humour in his classroom; for classroom management, building rapport, and finding levity in the margins of a school day. Luckily, he said sure. It's not all fun and games, but it should be at least sometimes fun and games, right? Have a listen, I hope you enjoy Episode 4!

Episode 3 - Mark Kyte - Extending Learning Beyond the Classroom

Episode 3 - Mark Kyte - Extending Learning Beyond the Classroom

For Episode 3 of Edknowledged I get to talk to Mark Kyte – Junior/Intermediate Teacher from the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board. In talking to Mark I get to hear about how he creates and curates learning opportunities for his class, and extends learning well beyond the conventional four walls of the classroom. Mark’s a great guy and a great teacher, and I hope you’re able to take something away from our conversation, as I have!

Episode 2 - Erin Walker - Leadership and Relationship

Episode 2 - Erin Walker - Leadership and Relationship

In this episode I was lucky enough to sit down with Erin Walker, who was most recently my supervisor and an altogether awesome human being. Erin recently retired from the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, where she inspired many with the importance she places on relationship. Whether as a classroom teacher, admin, or at the system level, her leadership is rooted in her mindfulness of others. I got to ask her about educational leadership, her inspirations, managing professional conflict, and more. There was also some sage wisdom in there about being what others need you to be, when they need it. I hope you like it!
