    Political Podcast Tijuana Journalism

    Political Podcast Tijuana Journalism

San Diego Political Podcast BowlersDesk.com 4-15-14: Tijuana Tuesday | Political Podcast with Vicente Calderon from TijuanaPress.com

Tijuana is the elephant in the room for San Diego news. Tijuana is an ignored city in San Diego news circles. Only stories that are sensational make even the back pages here in the states. And they almost always seem to be about violence.

I don’t think it because of a systemic racism. No it’s just about the dollars. The rating companies don’t give San Diego media the viewer numbers for their news product in Tijuana. So there is no way to monetize covering news just across the boarder. If the Nielsen rating company would give Tijuana number with San Diego numbers I’m sure we’d cover the city and people of Tijuana a lot more in San Diego.

However what that has done is opened the door to smaller news producers like the one i talked to for this BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast.

Journalist Vicente Calderon and I have known each other for years. He was an anchor in Los Angeles and left that to start a Tijuana based news website TijuanaPress.com

He and his team follow all the top stories in Tijuana. He is also the go-to-guy for Tijuana news. He often field produces for American and other international media when they need someone.

He’s covered all of what we think about as stereotypical Tijuana stories … prison riots, drug murders and cartel battles. However he and his team cover the stories that don’t get coverage in American media like political debates and even the odd art opening.

We talk about media freedom and making a living as a journalist in Tijuana.

In the middle of the interview small drone started flying over our heads, file that under weird. But it shows how similar our two countries approaches to gathering news are. I know the TV station I work is defiantly looking at using a drone to gather news, not using it yet but I’m sure its coming.

I think this is a fascinating podcast and I hope you enjoy it.

For this BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast We have the special guest Dan Carlin, podcaster, journalist, and provocateur. Hopefully you already listen to Dan’s podcast’s Hard Core History and Common Sense. They are some of the best out there.

We talked about media, news, and how that is impacting our political possess.

    Dan had some great insights.

I have to admit I got us of to a rocky start. My normal partner in crime Ric Epps was sick and completely lost his voice. But Dan cut me some slack and we moved or forged on.

BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast – Pope’tastic with Brad Kierkegaard

BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast – Pope’tastic with Brad Kierkegaard

BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast with Brad Kierkegaard, religious studies professor from San Diego State University.

And no he’s not a relation of the famous 19th century philosopher.

    We talked about the Pope.

The Pope is making waves inside and outside the church.

His views on what the Catholic Church should be focused on.

    The poor over birth control.

    His criticisms of global capitalism.

He’s even come out in favor of breastfeeding, though we don’t talk about that.

I waited as long as I did after Pope Francis came into power because I wanted him to have to time to do stuff before I started to judge him. Brad has some great points about this new Pope. I particularly like his comparison to Pope Emeritus Benedict.

We sat in the little chapel behind the alter at Saint Joseph’s, San Diego’s Cathedral.

Brad has this great way of couching his criticisms in positivity. It’s a fascinating and interesting chat.

BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast Barrio Logan Zoned Out

BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast Barrio Logan Zoned Out

I asked myself what San Diego political issue is both under talked about and very important to the mayor’s race?

The answer for me is Barrio Logan zoning regulations.

Now before you yawn think about this …

While at first blush zoning regulation don’t seem that exciting, these rules determine what you can do with your land, what business are allowed in a community, even how many people are allowed to live in a neighborhood.
So zoning has a direct and very important impact on your life.

Barrio Logan is a community created when the 5 freeway was built, bisecting Logan Heights. Under much protest and cries the freeway went through. Then the Coronado Bridge was built and sparking loud protests witch eventually lead to the creation of Chicano Park.

Now the community there wants to create some industrial free zones.

There is a lot of industry in Barrio Logan, lots of heavy industry. The most notable is the maritime industries. They pay a lot in tax, employ lots of people, and are very important to the city outside of the barrio.

This issue is making its way into mayoral election politics is some very interesting ways. The issue has a racial component that could be part of the reason the next mayor wins or why his opponent loses.

    Barrio Logan was born fighting.

And the people from there don’t back down, they are used to long fights.

This time on the Bowler’s Desk Political Podcast I sat down with Georgette Gomez from the Environmental Health Coalition. She’s a Barrio Logan native. She has a lot of interesting things to say about her almost decade long fight to make changes to the Barrio Logan zoning rules.

Agree or not you’ve got to respect her zeal and commitment.
