    Cinema LatinXperience: Silent Light

So far in this series we have highlighted Cumbia music in the barrios of Monterrey and seen differences of class and race within the bustle of Mexico City. This week, we are taken to the rural countryside of Chihuahua where our film presents the moral contemplations of a religious man. We dive head first into the ethnic-religious group known as Mennonites.

    Cinema LatinXperience: Roma

    Cinema LatinXperience: Roma

Week two’s film is Roma (2018), the powerful second punch of this series that convincingly argues that Mexican cinema and its reputation cannot be ignored. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Roma received ten Oscar nominations and took home three, including a nomination for Best Actress and a win for Best Director. This film also serves as testament to representation in an industry that has long been dominated by outdated standards of beauty and exclusivity.

Featured guest: Cecilia Yakin is a LatinX multidisciplinary artist from Cancún, Mexico and is now based in Austin, Texas. Her mediums are video (analog and digital), film photography, and ceramics. In her work she often explores themes of intimacy, sexuality, mental illness, and identity.

Perhaps you’ve come across this title while scrolling through Netflix, or maybe you read about it on the lineups of international festivals as it racked up numerous awards during its circuit. Regardless, here with us now is your chance to view the film that so many people are talking about and dancing along with, too.

This Week's Guest: Carlos Rocha is a photographer from Matamoros, Tamaulipas. Now based in Austin, Texas, Carlos travels regularly to Mexico City and the border to add perspective to his work and retain cultural ties.
