This is the place where we dissect and then discover the many ways ITD teachers all over this country are using their passion to create passionate students. We talk of measuring and manipulating a multitude of materials of design and divergent thought, of creation with our minds and with our hands. And most of all, we talk of growing great young people because of course that is what we do.

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 56: Datta Podcast: Conference Presenter Series – Generating Creative Confidence

Over the next several weeks it is my pleasure to speak with many of the presenters at this year’s conference and today, we will chat with 2 of these speakers. First is Kellie King who is leading a workshop names Design Thinking and the user experience. Then we spend some time with Malcolm Lee discussing his presentation using Lightburn the laser software.  Have a listen, hear a bit about both of the presentations and I’ll be back next week with more sensational presenters. At this year’s annual conference at the Brisbane convention centre from the 13th to the 14th of June.

And remember the 2024 Teacher Excellence Awards are looking for nominations right now so look to your left and look to your right. Because you may be sitting right next to someone who deserves to be applauded. There are two awards the Design and Technology teacher of the year and the contribution to design and technology education award for that person who is not a teacher but still does great things for our teaching area.

Welcome back to week 1 term 2 2024 and today I have Rory Johanson who is leading this terms DATTA teach meet.  So if you are in the position that I think most of us are changes are happening and those changes are all around the move from version 8.4 to version 9 of the technologies syllabus which is why we have called this teach meet to be held on May the 15th from 4.30 to 6.00pm Sharing good practice in 2024 looking at the ACARA version 9 syllabus for technologies. So how about we get Rory in to let us know all about it. And just because this is the last time I will be able to say it, this show was recorded at 2am because I got the time difference wrong, on West 123st which is right in the middle of Harlem and on the third floor of a real life brownstone building.

I can’t wait to see you on the 15th of May. Now if you would like to come along, just go to the DATTA website and to the drop down that says PD and that will take you to the Teach Meet page.

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 53: Datta Podcast: Designing people out of their homes.

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 53: Datta Podcast: Designing people out of their homes.

My original thought for today was to talk to a young designer about his thoughts on how he see’s design working against the people of New York and a bit about a Google program that he has been accepted into that is training young people to work in that field.

Francis Bazil is that young designer and he is quite simply a very impressive young man, so we did talk about what I was hoping to in the first fifteen minutes or so. Then things started on a bit of a tangent and then another which is why the show today is longer than normal. I don’t think it will come even close to showing you that I have found myself in a completely different universe these last weeks. So if you want to hear some of enormity of this place that is new York the last half may be a fun listen. And I am only going to say this a couple of more time but just to set the scene, this conversation was recorded in Andrew Carnegie’s mansion - now the museum – which is on fifth avenue overlooking central park.

Thank you, Francis, it was great fun!

BRIDGE BUILDING PODCAST EPISODE 52: DATTA PODCAST: TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARDS THE RACE BEGINS.

BRIDGE BUILDING PODCAST EPISODE 52: DATTA PODCAST: TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARDS THE RACE BEGINS.

Today, I am speaking with a few experts in the field. What field I hear you ask. The field of knowing just what a great teacher is and who are the best people to talk about what to expect from a great teacher, well students of course. So today I am talking with one of the students from the hive program at the museum here in New York and Francis Bazil who is the hive mentor and a design student at FIT. Now there is a reason for this because in this episode we will be launching the race for the 2024 teacher excellence awards. And these two young experts are going to give us an insight into the type of person that deserves to be celebrated in this way. Because quite simply you need to take note as many of us are sitting right next to someone who deserves to be applauded. Now there are two awards the Design and Technology teacher of the year and the contribution to design and technology education award for that person who is not a teacher but still does great things for our teaching area.

Just as an aside, Privacy rules over here are similar to home so the hive student is an avatar using empathetically designed name.

Not to harp on the fact, but just to set the scene, this conversation was recorded in Andrew Carnegie’s mansion – now the museum – which is on fifth avenue overlooking central park.

Thank you, Guys, your insights are brilliant!

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 51: Datta Podcast: The Hive @ Cooper Hewitt Design Museum

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 51: Datta Podcast: The Hive @ Cooper Hewitt Design Museum

The show, this first term of 2024 will probably have a different feel to it because quite unexplainably I have been awarded the Queensland Cooper Hewitt fellowship and am spending 12 weeks working at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. My aim is to create an introductory program to design teaching that will compliment the ITD teacher pathway program which is offering a pathway for teachers of other areas to come across to our side.

Today, I’m speaking with Kirsten McNally and Nadia Kim who are two of the educators at Cooper Hewitt and primarily work with teenagers in different programs across the museum. One of their programs is called the hive, A year long program to which students from the New York area apply. From over 300 applications 12 are chosen or in this case they just couldn’t choose, and the number went to 13.  Now one of the exciting things is that these kids are from low socio-economic families, so instead of just being accepted to the program they are interned, which means they get paid something like a part time job wage.  Many would have had to choose part time work instead of the program if this wasn’t the case.  Two passionate young ladies doing great work what a great conversation and just to set the scene, this was recorded in the library of Andrew Carnegie’s mansion - which is now the museum - overlooking central park.

Thank you, Kirsten thank you Nadia, I had a great time!
