SOLD - Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2011

SOLD - Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2011

A complex and politically urgent devised play about the hidden world of human trafficking based on interviews and encounters with real people. Sold is a fast paced ensemble drama composed of inter-cut filmic scenes which take us to African cocoa plantations, domestic houses and care-homes in the UK. Punctuated with ensemble movement, an original sound score and video projection the result is must-see theatre: innovative, powerful and affecting. Sold is directed by Complicite Associate Catherine Alexander (The Boy from Centreville 2008). Sold is supported by Central School of Speech and Drama, Quiconque, The Human Trafficking Foundation and Complicite Education.

The Choob - Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2011

The Choob - Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2011

When developing the idea for my piece I originally thought it would just be odd little monologues about tube travel and the judgements you make about other people on the tube just by looking at them. It has since followed a development pattern which has meant the piece is going from the traditional one-man-show faire, to something a bit more surreal – literally taking the audience on a tube journey where some strange things happen, and where they will meet some really bizarre characters…including a mafia boss American tourist, a celebrity stalker and a man with a very odd phobia…I will say no more as I do not want to spoil anything major. The show has been fermenting in my mind, it has become stronger and more tasty…it has become darker and more strange. The characters have aged and are floating about in my mind like ghosts, ready to be born into existence.
