One Life for the Sake of Many

One Life for the Sake of Many

NIcholas Winton's story in the beautiful film, One Life, shows how one life can affect scores of others, since he was the organiser of the Kindertrains that saved hundreds of children prior to World War II. This story shows how a person's decisions have effects that ripple throughout time.

One Life is a reflection of the words of Jesus: "Love your neighbour as yourself."

This sounds easy enough and straightforward, but proves to be challenging to do. Why? Because the ability to practice loving our neighbours can only be based on the first part of Jesus' original quote.

You see, loving others can only truly be experienced by first loving God, because He first loved us.

To be clear, people can love without God, but it is only by God's power that we truly can understand what it means to love our neighbour.

Love God, love others. They go hand in hand.

    Hungry for More

    Hungry for More

The most dangerous time to reach for a snack might be the hour before dinner is served. You've finished most of the day's tasks and your body is sending you signals that it's time to eat!

Our bodies tell us what we need. But so do our souls.

There is a hunger in each of us that food cannot satisfy.

It may surprise you that Jesus offers Himself as the bread of life. Bread was and is a major source of sustenance.

Jesus offers Himself as our source of sustenance and satisfaction.

He doesn't just offer us a temporary fix to our needs, but an eternal, fulfilling and rich feast.

So the next time you go to make a sandwich or a piece of toast, remember that Jesus offers us more than just energy,

but meets our hunger for eternity by offering Hijmself as the bread of life.

    I Forgot My Password

    I Forgot My Password

Recently, I went online to buy some tickets to see Taylor Swift. We'd missed out in the first round, but in the second round, much to my surprise, we got onto the ticket platform and found some tickets.

But as I went to finalise the transaction, I forgot my password to the ticketing platform. I frantically tried to remember, but I couldn't and so the transaction timed out and we missed out.

We missed out because I forgot one piece of information.

So, will this be how God lets people into heaven?

That if we panic and forget the right words (or password), we'll miss out on eternity with Him?

Well, no. A relationship with God is different. For not only is there unlimited space, but Jesus knows His people, died for them and prepares a place for them,

to ensure that His people will never miss out on life with Him.

    A Different Way to Rest

    A Different Way to Rest

Recently, I was reading about the incredibly long hours Australians work:

    4 million of us work more than 45 hours a week;
    2 million clock up to more than 50 hours;
while a million do over 60.

It's no wonder we're sometimes called the burnout capital of the world!

Why are we working so hard? There are lots of reasons, but for many, it feels like we have no choice.

We're slaves to a demanding system.

Which is why the words of Jesus are so comforting:

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you...for I am gentle and humble in heart."

Jesus says: bind yourself to Me, take My yoke upon you. Looking for a different way ro handle the busyness? Why not come to Jesus and discover His gentle and humble way?

    The Watchlist: The Fall Guy

    The Fall Guy

Russ Matthews & Ben McEachen discuss this real life stunt man and director David Leitch, the blockbuster director of Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and the producer of John Wick, Nobody and Violent Night, comes his most personal film yet. A new hilarious, hard-driving, all-star apex-action thriller and love letter to action movies and the hard-working and under-appreciated crew of people who make them: The Fall Guy.

Film Summary: Filmed throughout Sydney before the recent Writer’s/Actor’s strike, the crew were seen from the Opera House to the beaches of this beautiful city. Jody Moerno (Blunt) is filming the latest sci-fi romance with the biggest star in Hollywood, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), in the lead role. When Tom goes missing, the film’s executive producer, Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham), calls in former stuntman Colt Seavers (Gosling) to help on set and to do his best to find the missing star. This solution produces as many problems as it does results since he is Jody’s former boyfriend, and it was during the last Tom Ryder production that the action choreographer was severely injured. Yet, Colt decides to come out of retirement and head to Sydney to help save the movie. Still, it doesn’t take long for him to realise that there is more to Ryder’s disappearance than he is led to initially believe.

We've got a lot of ground to cover!

So many shows, so little time. At least it feels like it. Between all the different streaming platforms and the blockbuster movies coming to cinema trying to get audiences back in a post-COVID world, we are spoilt for choice on screen – and yet, still “have nothing to watch”.

Deciphering all the voices in entertainment and how to think about the themes raised in movies, TV, and streaming is tough: enter our new podcast The Watchlist.

    Lovin' Vegemite

    Lovin' Vegemite

    Oooooh I love vegemite

Think of a buttery, crusty slice of bread – with Vegemite smeared on top.

    Yum!

But let’s face it … we only love vegemite because it’s Australian!

We wouldn’t love it if it was American! Eeeeeew yuk!

But it’s the same the other way around.

The rest of the world doesn’t love Vegemite. Because they’re not Australian.

They love other weird stuff – like durian, or oysters, or black pudding. But never Vegemite.

But we love Vegemite because we’re Australian. It’s Australian. It belongs to us.

    It’s the same with Jesus.

The rest of the world finds us unlovable. Not smart enough. Not rich enough. Not good looking enough.

But Jesus loves us. Because we belong to him.

He loves us so much that he died for us and poured out his Spirit on us. So that we can belong to him forever.

And yes there will be vegemite in heaven, so the rest of the world better learn to love it.
