006 - Struggling with Collaboration in Fashion

In our sixth and final episode of Season 1, three of our StyleCircle executives unpack what it takes to collaborate as a fashion professional in Toronto. The Toronto fashion industry is quite small and in the case of collaborating that can be both helpful and challenging. On the one hand it makes meeting people easy as most industry members work with the same people and move in similar circles. But it can also be daunting if you're an emerging professional trying to break into a particular "clique". In this episode we chat about our struggles with collaborating, the importance of networking, and how to work with others without burning bridges. Like, rate and subscribe if you'd like to hear a Season 2!

005 - Struggling with Power in Fashion

005 - Struggling with Power in Fashion

In this episode the team questions why an industry like fashion, which is mostly dominated by and catered to women, is still run by men. Have you ever noticed that fashion media and the people who make up companies are mostly female, and yet the highest echelons of power in the industry are positions held by men like Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford and the like? Well we have, and we want to talk about it. Why is it that a "progressive" industry like fashion hasn't had its #MeToo reckoning? Luke Severin, our President and Creative Director, joins us to discuss why, historically, fashion has struggled with gender equality and power distribution, and shares how we can change that moving forward. The Book by StyleCircle Issue 03 is now available for pre-order as our first print run is SOLD OUT!

004 - Struggling with Diversity in Fashion

004 - Struggling with Diversity in Fashion

This episode we dive deep into the challenges the fashion industry is currently facing with diversity, inclusion and authentic representation. Diversity in fashion means many things and involves many intersectional, and often times complicated layers. Whether it is racial diversity, or religious, gender, or body diversity, talking about inclusivity in fashion is a lot. But it needs to be done if we are to move forward. This episode we have 3 amazing guests, Ubah Guled, Vanessa Smikle and Nabra Badr, join us to talk about racial diversity in fashion media, the challenges of being a make-up loving person of colour, and how the industry can do better at representing all people, authentically. Although this episode focuses on racial diversity in fashion, this is by no means an exhaustive discussion and we hope to cover other facets of diversity on this show in the future. The Book Issue 03 is now available via Instagram (@stylecircle) and the Ryerson Campus Bookstore.
